When I read about the life and words spoken by this historical figure, I am perplexed. I don't understand why they called him crazy.

Hard to say, honestly. It's not unusal to call someone crazy when really, they aren't. However, even today, if a person doesn't conform to what society deams "normal" they are called "crazy".
