When you receive a gift from others,..

...will you open it immediately or later? Personally, I cannot wait to open it later. As much as possible, I do not want surprises. So I just need to unwrap it right then and there. In some countries, it is impolite to do this like in China. I find it strange. How about you, guys? What is your personal practice in receiving gifts? Image Credit: purchase.ie

If the person giving it is right there then I'll open it immediately. Otherwise I tend to wait a little

I remembered during my school days at the primary and secondary level. We usually exchange gifts with a person I picked. I want to show my feelings about the gift to a giver.

If it's a gift for no particular occasion, I open it straight away. If it's for my birthday or Christmas I save it til the day.

I did not think this. I agree that it depends on what the occasion is. It is better to open the presents with the family members on Christmas Eve together.

@Shavkat That's right, but we actually open our Christmas presents on Christmas day.

@sharonelton We usually open on Christmas Eve because the kiddies were excited to open them.

You are right. In my country, it is not proper to open the gifts directly, especially when the givers are in front of you. It is just a different culture and custom.

@Shavkat It will be embarrassing. Try to imagine if there is not much inside the red pocket. Would you try to pretend you are very happy?

I respect the culture. But I think it is fine to open the red packet with the giver. Or, it is still impolite.

It depends, if it is a gift for Christmas I wait until Christmas day. If it is a guest who comes to dine, I immediately open the gift in front of the one who offered it to me.

We also practice this. However, it did not practice last Christmas day because of this pandemic. The presents were delivered to my niece and nephew ahead of time.

@Shavkat I often receive Christmas gifts in advance, I place them under the tree, part of the excitement is to open them the Christmas Eve at midnight.

I don't like waiting, but sometimes it's necessary, like on Christmas when everyone else is still asleep.

With this situation, I consider waiting for Christmas Eve to come. I will join in with the family members in opening our presents at the same time.

I heard about this belief. However, my granny does not like it. She wants to get all the wrappers and keep them.

@gamayngbaki I find it interesting. My granny loves to put them under her bed. I think most elders love to collect and keep them.

@Shavkat I know why she does not like ripping gift wrappers because I'm also a grandma She likes to keep the wrappers because she wants to reuse them or recycle them

That would depend. If the person intended for me to open immediately, then I will. If not, I'll wait for later and open the gift. Then I would send a thank you message complete with the gift image and lots of love.

If it is the Christmas season, I prefer not to open them. I will wait for Christmas Eve and open them.

I suppose it is a cultural thing to open or not open . . . but I do ask the person if I should open it now or wait . I personally like it when someone opens a gift in front of me just so I can see their reaction.

@Shavkat There have been too many times that people didn't open up the gift in front of us - but then never told us what they thought of the gift later. That kind of saddens me, after all the thought in buying that gift.

You have a point. Sometimes the giver wants us to feel surprised on the spot. I am like that wanted how they react when opening and finding out what's in the box.

I also like this way, too. Sometimes I need a receiver to check the gift right away, What if I bought clothes, I need to know if the size is right for him or her. If not, then there will be a chance to be replaced. But it will be an embarrassing moment. To refrain from it, I need to be sure what accurate size they have.

I would open the gift in front of the person who gave it to me. I'm sure they would get pleasure out of my response. It's normal practice in the US.

@Shavkat We always opened our presents on Christmas morning. We were up bright and early. The suspense was overwhelming. I do know that some in the US have the tradition of opening one present on Christmas Eve. Our family never did though.

I agree. If it is in the public, I need to consider not opening it. Unless if I am proposing to a woman, then I need her to open the small box.

I think it depends on what the giver wants. They often want to see our expression when it's opened other times they may ask us to wait till they're gone.
