Certain people, in certain circles, like to tease me about the fact that I am adamant about saving aluminum cans. Not only do I do it because I think it is better to recycle them than to just have them buried in a landfill. I get money for it as well. "Is it really that worth it, Jim?" some will ask me. I happen to think it is. And today I turned in 190 pounds worth and walked away with $95. It's not retirement money. It's not enough for Uncle Sam to come knocking on my door wanting their little piece of the action. But it is still $95 I would have thrown literally into the garbage can. If I were to ask someone, "Are you willing to fold up a $100 bill and just toss it into the garbage can?" Of course they'd look at me wild eyed and proclaim hell no! But when you throw your cans away? Ultimately, that is EXACTLY what you are doing.

Good for you! I don’t buy canned beverages, but my next-door neighbor saves his cans for me. I take them to the no-kill animal shelter for them to cash in.

That's a good cause too. Nice you can offer them a way to fund operations.

In one of my trips to the US I was amazed at how, a family where I stayed for a few days, used part of their time collecting aluminum cans. Then we only had glass and plastic bottles in my country. They placed it in a corner of their garden and every now and then they went to get money. It wasn´t little either. Congratulations!

A lot of people do this. If one goes for a walk, often times they can find many, many aluminum cans lying around. And it's literally like picking up money.

@marguicha That is another benefit for sure. It still amazes me people just think its okay to just toss stuff like this out their window.

How the heck did you end up with 190 pounds worth of aluminum cans? How long have you been saving it for? We don't buy soda (in cans) often so not much cans to recycle. I never take it to the store and just put it out for recycling. But maybe it is a good idea to do that. Even getting thirty cents for 6 cans is not bad. Money is money.

@NJChicaa I imagine you don't go through many cans to make it worthwhile I suppose.

We recycle too. We have bins for it that they collect once a week. But I am sure when it comes to aluminum you have recycling centers you can go to to get money for it. Aluminum recycling is big business.

We have at least 15 garbage bags full of aluminum cans ready to go to the recycling center. We are hoping for some dinner money! lol

@LindaOHio My wife would kill me if I kept the cans in the house. They attract a lot of fruit flies.

That will probably bring in a good amount. We had 14 bags of crushed. Came out to 190 pounds and we got 50 cents per pound. It was a good haul I think.

I suppose that would make cashing any in a bit of a difficult thing to accomplish. lol

We drink very few things that come in cans, but I will pick them up if I see them. I never have a huge amount but it does keep them out of the landfill. We have a special trash can just for the cans.

For me that's part of the equation. I know the cans be made into new cans, and I'd prefer that be the case than have them in a landfill only to leave us mining more aluminum ore.

Recycling is really a good way to save and/or earn money. We also save empty bottles ( we don't consume canned softdinks) and we sell them to junk shops. Sometimes we use empty plastic bottles to plant vegetables.

I always say, anything that someone is offering you money for that would otherwise be considered trash is worth the time to collect and cash in on.

That is pretty much the way I look at it. I mean, we are literally throwing money into the garbage can. And nobody would actually throw actual money away...so why throw it away this way?

We save ours but 190 pounds would take up a fair amount of room. Do you put them in bags?

Not a terrible amount of room. I crush them and bag them. This was about 14 bags full.
