Excess or moderation?

I've decided that most things in excess can be bad and that most things in moderation can be good. Of course, there are exceptions to both. Such as drinking too much alcohol can lead to a lot of dangerous outcomes. Not only car accidents, addiction, liver failure, ruined marriages and careers, but many other life changing effects. But I don't believe a glass of wine at night enjoying talking with my husband is harmful. A little red wine is said to be beneficial to heart health. But like everything, too much can be "too much." Having a successful career often means more income for the family, more self confidence, enjoyment being with friends/co-workers. But when a person's career becomes their main objective in life with no room or time for family and friends, then it can destroy relationships. We know that sharing our time and wealth with those in need is often a good thing. But when it takes all our time and wealth, our loved ones are often neglected. I absolutely love and enjoy fresh potatoes and string beans from the garden with a plate of fried corn bread and sweet tea. And in moderation, it's relatively healthy. But if I ate three servings seven days a week and drank a gallon of sweet tea a day, it definitely wouldn't be healthy! Even going to church can be unhealthy in excess. When our kids were young, we went to church every Sunday morning, Sunday night, and Wednesday night. And we loved it. We had a great pastor, wonderful friends, and fellowship. We served God and others and taught our children to love God. But some people can take that too far. They spend so much time "serving God" that they neglect their families. I've seen resentful adults whose parents spent much more time trying to be super Christians than being good parents. So, I do believe that most, not all, things in moderation are okay. And I know that most, not all, things in excess are not okay. How do you feel about it?

I agree. Anything that is too much is not good. You can enjoy life when you do it in moderation

I agree with you. Anything in excess is dangerous. I've heard people can spend so much time working for God they forget to enjoy being in His presence and listening for the still small voice. Happy Easter. Enjoy being in God's presence tomorrow.

Living a balanced life is what we need. Setting boundaries to help us gain that balance.

When I was younger, moderation was easy to talk about but very hard to do. Nowadays it is just lacking the energy to be excessive!

Your church example resonates with me. My dad is a pastor, and we went to church every time the doors were open. But for the first four years at the church we grew up in (we were at it 12 years), while my mom was always involved, my dad was scarce because everything was church. He recognized he was neglecting his children, with my mom's help, and really changed.

I think you are absolutely right. They talk about 'too much of a good thing', don't they?

Right, I adore peanut butter fudge, but too much is REALLY too much!
