After the Texas blackout of 2021

The massive arctic blast that hit Texas this winter was so intense that the power grid almost went under. The car sat in the driveway for a few weeks until temperatures reached above freezing and finally the roads were safe enough to drive on. It turns out that I needed an oil change. I usually change our car's oil once every 6 months, because due to in-city driving, there are a lot of stops and starts at traffic lights and a lot of in-and-out driving in slow traffic. The power grid almost but not quite, went down in the lone star state. Thankfully, our car had a coolant freeze tolerance to about 20 above Zero degrees. The temperature in fact, got below that for several hours on one day when at the coldest point, a car drove across our front lawn, smashing a new tree and avoiding hitting our house by about 2 or 3 feet, leaving 4 tire tread marks in it's wake. It drove away and that was the last we saw of it. The bad thing about all of it was that the US Post Office was slower than molasses in the arctic circle in January. I had ordered a gallon of anti-freeze via Amazon Prime and that was before the temperature reached sub freezing levels. It took over 3 weeks to get that gallon of anti-freeze. So I was glad at least the temperature did not get down too cold for too long. Nobody in Texas was prepared for that sudden drop in temperatures, as it had been several years since we even had a winter with any snow or ice. Coping with COVID-19 and seeing America get vaccinated during a 4th Wave with the new variants, in particular, the South African Variant and Brazilian Variant, and Governor Abbott lifting the mask mandate in our state, I still feel a bit more optimistic. We got our 1st Covid-19 vaccine last month and will be getting a second vaccine shot in a few weeks. People are still buying large amounts of paper towels and toilet paper and bottled water. I think that, even when this Pandemic is over we can expect to see stranger weather and to top things off, in spite of that artic blast and a Capitol Insurrection by Trump MAGA radicals, I still remain somewhat optimistic. I have friends who still support Trump. Believe it or not! I have some friends who refuse to get vaccinated against Covid-19. I for one got the vaccine shot. I am still using common sense when I go out in public by wearing a mask, but social distancing? Give me a break. No way will there be any social distancing. The stores now are at 100% capacity and even though most are still following the logic of masking, stores are over crowded, stores are experiencing panic purchasing and due to the Easter holiday weekend, long lines for shoppers are to be expected until the holiday weekend is over with. Good Friday was a bad Friday for us. We had to stand in Walmart to check out for over an hour then were told to go to another checkout line as the checker in our line was about to clock out and we went to another line and after 30 minutes of standing in line to pay for our items, were told the same thing. We finally got to a line where we could actually get our items checked out and paid for and by the time we got out of that store, the parking lot was maxed out and half the items on the shelves were being re-stocked. The store had never been this crowded or busy. Factor in the lifting of the mask mandate along with allowing businesses to work at 100% capacity and Easter Sunday coming up tomorrow, it is no wonder stores like Walmart, Kroger and CVS have seen a sudden upsurge in customers making purchases. The streets of Dallas TX are crowded and it looks a lot like we will be opening stadiums to greater numbers. The future looks better in my opinion but still we have yet to get children ages 12 and over vaccinated so they can return to public schools. At the moment, the US has had not quite 50% vaccinated at least one time and most will be getting a second vaccine, but herd immunity may never be reached so it might be actually, a few more years before the rates of infection go down to a level of normalcy. Normal? What am I talking about? Covid-19 is not normal. The political influencers are making it hard for some people to feel safe about vaccines. This has been a long up-hill battle for everyone. Hand sanitizers are being taken off the shelves not by consumers but by the FDA demanding it due to reports of Benzene contamination so as far as I know, the only brand that is supposedly 100% free of Benzene in the alcohol is Purell. Here is a link to an article about Purell hand sanitizer

Wow! What an update. Sounds like things are in a turmoil in Texas. Even with two shots you can still get COVID-19; and we plan on continuing to wear our masks, etc. We haven't seen the hoarding again yet here. I'm sure it's coming. We are stocked up on paper products and coffee. We heard that coffee was going to be in short supply because of the Suez Canal block-up. I don't know if that's true. Have a great day; and I hope that your bad weather is over for some time to come.

Fortunately, the Suez Canal is cleared from that huge cargo ship and they are moving things through now.

I know. Keep wearing mask and stock up on coffee. Both are good things to maintain during the 3rd and 4th waves.

Well, it's good to see that Texas seems to be recovering from that unseasonably freezing cold winter. I count myself thankful Florida had been spared. Happy you got your first shot because if that helps you feel better, and that's the right thing for you. Good for you.

@lookatdesktop I have problems wearing a mask, which is why I've never worn one. I also heard that mask restrictions have been lifted in Texax, so I don't see why you can't just stop wearing a mask. You should be able to calmly explain to someone why you can't wear one, if they ask. I'm not going to risk my life, because someone else thinks wearing a mask protects them from getting sick. Newsflash... it doesn't. Same goes with and for social distancing. What's really making people sick is all the so-called procautions being taken to slow the spread. You're right, social distancing is a joke. It's not pratical. Grocery store asiles may seem wide enough, but when you add shopping carts, scooters or wheelchairs, they aren't as big as they look.

It will help me feel better only when enough people get their shots and we can actually stop having to wear masks because masks make me have a lot of trouble breathing. I have respiratory issues. Sleep apnea and bronchitis. when I go out wearing a mask, I have to return to my car, and sit a while without the mask, just to get my breath. The idea of social distancing is unrealistic especially as time moves forward. Protests reveal that over 50 percent of people in general are totally opposed to conforming to restrictions and they will constantly protest all over the world. The human condition during Covid 19 is a testament to the well informed and courageous or ignorant and denialists among us.

Crazy times, well, at least have better leader running the show, not my favorite but he is actually doing better and more than I thought he would. I am not sure whats going on with your state or Georgia but sounds like its nothing nice. I was amazed The MLB pulled the all star game do to oppression type policies from the state of Georgia that has no business in being placed if you call yourself the land of the free. Glad you and your family at least getting by and the car is running, I myself dread shopping these days, I order online or just go to a convenient store buy 10 bottles of Jack Daniels and then go now I am ready to go shopping. I make the bad jokes.

Sounds like an exciting time was had by all! The big freeze made the news here and I've been watching NBC on YouTube. A bit disingenuous to blame the renewable energy sources for the problem considering they have them at the South Pole without these hitches. And it seems Abbot had different explanations depending which channel he was on. Glad you were able to get the jab. Despite having had my first, I still wear a mask and try to act like I've not had it, as you never know you could be passing it on. Haven't seen anything on the benzene news, not something you want to find out the hard way. I suppose now you are looking forward to the big roast, in a few months!

Well, if we do cook out in July, I will still not want people who have not been yet vaccinated. In fact, if we have any type of gathering I will socially distance myself anyway. And hope some of those anti-vaxers will have a change of heart and to get their vaccine shots.

thanks for this post of yours. I was worried about my car. I was of two minds about having it serviced or not next week. I hardly used it in 2020, but most of my driving have been with lots of stop & go etc (city driving) since the beginning of this year.

I had the oil changed just because of the constant stop and go and extreme cold snap in February. The car runs best when I can take it for a long drive outside the city along a main highway, just to clean out the engine and burn off some build up that happens when a car is only driven in city.

That's a good news that situation there is getting better. it is the opposite here. Covid seems to be eternal.Good thing am not a fan of hand sanitizers though I use them when I see them in public places.

I carry a 3 or 4 oz. bottle in my shirt pocket of Suave brand hand sanitizer. I haven't had any problem but I don't wear gloves. Those gloves make your hands sweat and besides, the gloves have a tendency to make it uncomfortable to wear in any case.

Bring your own and if you buy a bottle of hand sanitizer make sure it is not on the list of brands that contain trace amounts of Benzene. Purell is the brand I prefer.
