Frugal Cooking: Dinner cost me less than $0.25

United States
April 4, 2021 10:04pm CST
Because I only ate one of the chicken legs, my dinner ended up costing me less than $0.25 tonight. I bought chicken legs on sale the other day, and they ended up being about 12 cents each. I wasn't very hungry, so a cucumber onion salad that I made the other day fit the bill with the one chicken leg. Photo is my own.

you definitely saved a lot. There's no way i can eat something like that as low as 25 cents unless it's sardines.

I LOVE sardines, but I cannot get a tin of those for less than $1.50 or so.

@TheSojourner That was one dish my mother never cooked that I always loved. I would always get it at Picadilly!

@kareng I'm guessing...Picadilly is a restaurant?

You found a great deal buying the chicken legs for a meal.

I found a package of them for $2.48 for 14 legs. They were reduced in cost, and had a mfr $1 off coupon, so total, $1.48. So, I guess my math was off. Technically, that's just over 10 cents a piece!!

That's the key, I think. I only share costs with you all to give ideas. But, if I were feeding others, no one would ever know. LOL

It was my favorite part. Lol I just know that I have to eat protein each meal. Based on my dietary needs, if I don't, I can cause myself some major issues. I ate two boiled eggs today made into a wrap sandwich. I have not eaten anything else except the biscotti and a cup of tea. For the rest of the day.

@yoalldudes What foods do you think you cannot eat in old age? I'm sure you have a long ways to go to get there. :-) I don't listen much to doctors, but listen to my body. :-)

We will never have chicken legs at such a cheap price.

The original cost of the package was $4.96 for 5.14 lbs. It was half price discounted, and then the $1.00 off. I bring them home and immediately repackaged for freezing in three 4-leg packages and a 2-leg package.

@TheSojourner I think that your store can sell at a price lower than they paid for the goods, but this is not allowed here in Switzerland... they can donate, but not sell at a loss.

@LadyDuck There were some stores that are like that here where they are not able to put things on sale. The store policy dictates that they must donate them. Trader Joe's is like that.

I wanted something really simple for tea, so settled on Beans on Toast. Not quite as cheap as yours, but I liked it!

The original price on the package was about 50 cents each leg. Finding them on sale, plus the extra dollar off, I'm able to get them and then freeze them immediately. I felt lucky!

:-) I could only eat one, and I took a bite of the other. I boiled it tonight, and the bone from the other for a broth, added noodles and seasoning and that was my dinner tonight. Might have a piece of fruit in a little bit. Not very hungry today.

@marguicha Dusted with flour, egg, and then seasoned flour. Light oil in cast iron, pan fried, then covered until cooked done, then crisped back up w/o the cover.

On a whole chicken, I don't typically like the legs at all. But I cannot justify not eating them when they are as inexpensive as I found them.
