Knee You Later

My dad is having knee replacement surgery tomorrow, and it's about time. He's needed both knees replaced since he was in his forties (he's 65 now). I don't know how many times he tore his ACLs and MCLs. It's been bone on bone for years, and his knee caps come out of place every day. I can tell when it happens because his face looks arrested for a moment, and then it pops back in place. This will finally force him to slow down, and I don't know how he'll handle that. He's always on the go, and around people. Any of you know anyone who has had a knee replaced? I hope he follows instructions, and doesn't rush it.

Yes I do know. You can be your Father's nurse while he is going through therapy! I'm sure he would love to be spoiled!

He'll definitely appreciate the company, and I can help if or when his wife gets tired.

I pray all will go well with your dad. I've had tons of surgeries, but thankfully no joint replacements.

My dad did, and he did slow down a bit, but some people never slow down so it'll be interesting to see what direction your dad goes.

His first knee surgery decades ago they sliced and diced him. His 2nd, 3rd, and fourth weren't nearly as bad.

I don’t know anybody who has had their knees replaced. My dog was diagnosed with patellar lunatics though and that was when she was pregnant. Fortunately it was just grade 1 and she doesn’t need surgery. She’s running and jumping, and climbing up and down the stairs as if she doesn’t have it now. So i am relieved.

As long as I can remember my mother used to complain about her knees being bad, sore and whatnot. She always claimed that she needed knee replacement surgery, as it turned out, she actually required hip replacement surgery. She had both done, it was hard on her. Since she was a widow by the time that she had them done, they would not release her to her home to recover, and she knew that before going in, so she had to check into a rest home for 8 weeks to recover. They helped her with the exercises, and she actually fell once, so it was a good thing that she was there. I wish your Dad good luck with his surgery. I am sure that if he could put up with the bad knees for 20 years, then the surgery and recovery should be a snap for him.

I've had one knee and one hip replaced. The knees are definitely harder to recover from and more painful. Good luck to your dad. I'm glad he's getting it done. He will feel so much better in the end. One thing he needs to do is not cut the rehab short. He will need all the physical therapy that he can get.

@AmbiePam I cut my physical therapy short with the knee; and I have less range of motion than I should have.

I live in a residence with 300 old people--many had knee replacements and all agree that the physical therapy after is the answer to a better recovery!

I've had both knees replaced. Once he's through recovery and physical therapy he shouldn't need to allow down in his activities. My second one hurt so much less that I overdid exercise in the beginning and was yelled at by the surgeon. Later I had issues with it and always wonder if it's because I pushed myself to much in the beginning. Even then the new ones are so much better than the old and I never tore either of mine.

He's going to be so happy with the knee replacement. Will he have both of them done? I had a knee replacement on both of them last year, September and November. I'm so happy I did. I hope he has someone to take him to his therapy appointments. Therapy is so important. My knees are both doing very well after seven and five months. I am in the pool and fitness center almost every day minus weekends.

I saw him today, and he was better. The first four days were terrible he was in such pain, but physical therapy has helped. His wife will take him to PT when he eventually gets to leave the house, but I am more than happy to take him too. Right now, he just tires easily. Your story makes me feel better. I think he wants to do the second knee in the fall.

@AmbiePam That's good he will. He might even insist on it with how well the first knee feels with therapy.

I hope your dad's knee replacement went well - important to keep up with what they give him for PT. My mom had her hip replaced and is a lot more comfortable now
