Among the least and the last....(A Rant)

Friends posted photos yesterday of their vaccination in my city. So I called the baranggay why I have not received any advisement of the inoculation schedule. I was told that the City Health Office has a master list and I must wait for my call. Albeit my daughter, the doctor, prodded me to go and get my vaccine. So I did, at the last hour, only to be told to come back 12 April for the Astra Zeneca vaccine. Besides, the inoculation for the day is done. My daughter was insistent - get the vaccine. So my elder daughter brought me to the Center and she waited the line for me. I stayed in the car. My daughter rang me on the cp and said I'm up for vital signs check - temperature and blood pressure. Normal. Proceeded to the next station only to be told that upon advisement of the Department of Health, I must wait for the Astra Zeneca. I argued that my daughter told me to get the Sinovac. The people in charge wouldn't budge. Till the Mayor came before noon. So I approached him and tapped on his back, identified my self, gave my address, and said that upon advisement of my daughter, I must get the Sinovac. Right away, he told me that my case has now become legal - and I must sign a waiver for the shot. I agreed and thanked him, Was ushered to an air-conditioned room at the second floor. The VIP's were there for their inoculation. I couldn't help but think - what about the rest of the population who did not gather the courage to come to the Center? What if I did not mention my daughter as a doctor of a private hospital? Surely I would be treated among the least and the last. By the way, my elder daughter was not given a shot because she is not a frontliner. But I asked some of the people there - neither were they frontliners, just friends of those who knew about the inoculation. This is why my country is third world.

Thanks for sharing your experience. It's good that you got the option to take Sinovac instead of the AZ. And who might those VIPs be and why is there a VIP room in the first place??

I fought for the chance to get a Sinovac shot for hours. Had the Mayor not come, I would have been deprived of it. The VIPs are the lovely looking people - the rich, the wealthy, and the haves. A special section for them in the upper room while the people endure the heat outside, with tents for cover.

It's the same with the "ayuda" (financial aid). Some get it because they know someone in the baranggay hall.

I didn't get mine. Hu hu. Yup, there are people who couldn't be trusted in the barangay. At the height of the pandemic last year, our barangay hall was renovated. But I received rice and sardines.

@merrybelle2021 It has become a survival of the fittest scenario. Remember how the consumers hoarded grocery items for fear of getting hungry during the lockdown last year? So disgusting really. Don't let these loud neighbors affect you. Be the good example so at least they would feel guilty. Tell them to "give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's." If they don't cringe with that, heaven help them. Not your fault any longer.

@eileenleyva Yes, we received rice and canned food also last year, and gave them to family members who need them more. But I don't like hearing that some neighbors don't get it, or only once, while others always received them.

Thank you very much. I had to speak up. There's a scarcity of vaccine in my country. Our government is really unreliable. We wouldn't know when the next vaccine will be made available. I thought that if I don't get that vaccine, I will be restricted from going out longer. I wouldn't want to compromise my elder daughter exposed to the mutant virus all the time. She does all the grocery for us. She wouldn't be vaccinated till we know not when. So I did not hesitate at all to approach the Mayor.

I am very grateful. It's just the lousy system I was ranting about, plus the fact that the rich are first in line again. I feel sorry for the poor who are cramped in their thatched dwellings. They won't get inoculated, because, as you say, there's a shortage of vaccine. The rich could have deferred their vaccine for the poor. They have comfortable abodes anyway.

Thank you. The people around were shocked at how I sought the Mayor for an audience. But I gotta do what I gotta do. I need that Sinovac. Besides, the Mayor is my servant, I am his boss. Ha ha. The doctors did attend to me immediately.

@gamayngbaki I was grateful for what happened. But come to think of it, had the mayor not come, I would have failed.
