Dreams

- I read it somewhere that if one eats a lot of cheese before sleep, the dreams that night will be a bit confusing and nightmarish due to the breakdown of cheese. (I tried that a few times, but failed to have that result, perhaps because I didn't eat enough cheese. ) - Some says that having a light meal will give you a good night sleep. (I accidentally had a very light meal once (mainly just veggies) and ended up having a very bad night that night (I kept waking up to empty my bladder!).) - I had a mainly meat dinner last Easter. That night I had many weird and confusing dreams. (Guess it was the result of my body tried digesting all those yummy cooked meats .) - Whenever I worked so hard on a certain project, I always dreamed about that for at least a few nights. For example, in my youth, I once was asked to help an organization out re: picking apples. For some nights afterwards, I saw myself doing just that in dreams: picking apples. (That might be why whenever I binge-watched detective movies, I always saw detective stuff in my dreams that night.) - Whenever I worried about something, I often either + dreamed of being stuck on high ledges or top of buildings, and tried not to fall down, or + seeing water rising up surrounding me in dreams + dreamed of returning to my childhood (where I was protected by my parents etc) + praying in some Churches, or seeing religious people around me. ---- Has any of your dreams ever linked somehow with what you ate from the night before or was a result of your mental state at the time? Do share with me please since I am very curious about this.

well, i experienced this once when i ate a lot at 12 am, it was very hard for me to sleep. Also, when I watch youtube video till i fall asleep, the continuation of the story happens in my dream

NEVER, my dreams have never been linked to what the evening before. I often cannot sleep well, no matter what I eat. I had premonitory dreams, this happened more in the past, may be there were more things to be concerned about.

@YrNemo I am glad to have less premonitory dreams. Every time I had a disturbing dream about someone I was so concerned and I could not dare to talk to that person.

I guess you are a practical person (very logic), hence dreams don't link to past activities. My mother is like you in regards of having premonition dreams. (I didn't believe her when I was in my teens, but after so many events, I have begun to believe her as well as respect this special gift of hers.)

@LadyDuck Glad that I don't have your gift because whenever I dreamed of losing my sister or mother, I always got upset when waking up, until I remembered that they were just bad dreams.

The only thing I have noticed is that if we eat dinner earlier (because we often eat late), I do sleep better and wake up more refreshed. I think when we eat late, the food doesn't have enough time to digest, so it's just sitting there trying to digest while we sleep . . . meaning the body is not resting. I am so pooped that I have no trouble sleeping, but then I wake up in the middle of the night with anxiety (about life and the world) - then I don't get back to sleep for a couple hours or so. I rarely recall dreaming, but perhaps because I am not fully resting.

@YrNemo Ah, so maybe there is something to that then? I remember a doctor saying that we shouldn't go to bed any less than 3 hours after meal. Often we eat after 8 and then sleep around 10:30 - so that's not good. The waking and stressing has been at its worst in the past couple years.

@much2say It is difficult to be a mother, a wife etc (with young children). But one day when the children all grow up and leave, it becomes a new difficulty trying to adjust to the new situation. (Looking back, I did tell my teenage children at the time to treasure the time we had with each others. Blinks a few time, and now they all lived somewhere else... )

I found the same, sleeping right after having a big meal never gave me a good sleep. (There was a certain period of my life when I was so worried about this and that (family problem), I very often woke up suddenly in the middle of the night and couldn't sleep again.)

Coffee before bed or other foods never bothered my sleep or caused weird dreams. My multitude of notifications caused nightmares which had me writing responses which I thought were real. I woke up not finding my iPad in my hand! When teaching, my principal asked me to create something for a hall bulletin board. While sleeping, an idea came to me which I used the next day. It was a hit! The mind is a strange thing. lol

I told my children often to go sleep, and let the brain help them solving their difficult maths problems, or whatever that worried them. Worked like a charm always. (Doesn't work however if the problem relates to find a big amount of money suddenly!!!) I solved quite a few maths problems that way . (ages ago )

@YrNemo They do say to sleep on it. It never helped me with math problems.

@DianneN We must be lucky then. My children were very proud when they woke up, and figured out why they did wrong with their ways of solving those maths problems. (A younger relative who often bugged me for ideas re: her art projects got told the same by me, go sleep on it. She did figure out by herself quite a lot of times now, with a tiny nudge here and there from me. It is funny really, when people asked for our ideas, but the moment we said, 'do this, or that', they would promptly said, 'but I prefer the other...' )

When I'm working on a book, which is all the time, I sometimes have dreams related to the book.

I hope those dreams help with the plots of your books. I told my children when they were very young, some of my weird dreams, and they said, 'mom, make them into fictions, they are so good!' (Never had the time to do so when my kids were little .)

I have heard many reasons for dreaming but not sure if they are correct or not.

@CarolDM Any of them talking to you or asking you to do something for them? My father (who I didn't get along very well, because we were so alike in temper) asked me to tell my mom something for him. I did that, and my siblings laughed, said, 'why should dad ask you to do that?'

I am a bit skeptical about books which show people how to interprete dreams. My thinking is, it depends on how one's background, health, environment etc, that a certain dream means certain thing to some, while reflects different things to others.

I eat a good meal at night but I make sure to eat early dinner like 4:30pm. I follow the after six diet. I think it is helpful to sleep not feeling so full. I don`t experience bad dreams if I eat heavy meal only when I watch horror movies.

Glad to learn new things from your comment. I watched some comedy (horror) series a few times, but because they were comedy, I ended up sitting there laughing instead (and didn't dream a thing because I binge-watched and ended up so sleepy by the time I finished them.)

If I went window shoppings lots during the day, that night, I would be likely to have weird dreams with many strangers pop in and out.

Hmm... the only times I remember my dreams are when they are nightmares. It doesn't matter what I eat, only what I watch/see on TV or movies. If the shows are scary, I have nightmares. I haven't watched scary shows in years and don't remember my dreams anymore. It is nice!

I think eating before sleeping affects the suggestion not sleep patterns so much. But it state of mind certainly can affect our dreams.

@Lucky15 After Carrie, I haven't really searched for something similar (from his famous books). The short movies were just a series or something at the time on TV.

I was a bit scared OK after watching the movie Carrie. Since then, I have been avoiding reading his books. I watched a few more short movies based from his books, but not so sure I understand them. (Since I can't understand them, I am not frightened of them at all.)

I remembered once having yummy cake with all sort of creams in my dream. Odd because I can't eat cake with a lot of creams (I just can't, I felt very sick a few times now when I tried - as some sort of experiment). Regardless, THAT was a beautiful dream to me .

A few times I went to bed a bit hungry (too lazy to eat and brush teeth again, or prefer to sleep more than eat due to too little time left). Those times, I surely dreamed of attending big parties with lots of yummy foods. Incredible the way our brain could make up such a thing when the tummy demanded food.

Every now and then I would have a vivid dream that I couldn't understand why I had had them. Some turned out to be premonition later. Other than that, I tend to forget my dreams once I wake up.

I have not related it to food so far. Now that you tell me, may be I will try to. But as you said work related stuff ...yeah..I would startle up and get up...did I complete that, or did I do that right. We have last dates for filing some returns. So those dreams invariably ruined my sleep. LOL Another thing I noticed. When I was working, I used to work late in the evenings. It was not easy to get transport back for fairly long distance. I used to walk from the main road to home. It used to get quite lonely. I used to get dreams of lonely road in my dream. I still do at times.

Mama Mia, and you walked home alone in the dark like that? I admire your courage. (In my youth, I had to do part-time study (just a masters degree course) after work. I had to walk home in the dark, close to midnight time - the walk was only a km or so with a few houses on the way. I was scared stiff - yet I never dreamed about them ever. Guess the walk was too short in my case. .)
