Afraid to Wait

People are buying up fruit and vegetable plants here as soon as they come out. I was afraid to wait, because I do love to garden now that I have the time and am not in Florida. Due to a huge deer problem, I will grow my veggies and herbs on my deck along with flowers. So far, I am stocked up with lettuce, red peppers, green peppers, and as of today, cherry tomatoes. The peppers and tomatoes come inside when it’s too cool to leave them outside overnight. In one month, they will be outdoors for good. Still waiting for other herbs, veggies, and flowers to buy for my little garden. I used some lettuce already in my salads and on our hamburgers. It’s so exciting to me. Do you grow anything?

@DianneN That`s nice. Most gardens here are small because I live in the city. They create gardens from their balcony and It is still nice

@m_audrey6788 I would have to do that in Florida. We aren’t allowed to use the condo grounds.

I always had gardens that were fenced in when the kids still lived here. When they left, I gave up. Now I’m enjoying a small garden for two. You’re so sweet!

That's wise growing them in pots on your porch so the deer don't get at them. No, I don't grow anything. I've tried, but sadly my thumb is black. Nothing grows.

That’s too cold for now. It’s too soon to plant here, too, except for the lettuce. If it gets too cold, I can bring them inside the house. I still haven’t planted anything.

I've started most things from seeds . . . that's how this whole gardening thing started last year. Whatever we ate, we saved the seeds, and planted them . . . last year was full of planting experiments. This year I am holding off . . . only because we are getting block walls built around the yard soon, and I don't want the workers to trample over our stuff. We do have a small area where we have newly grown sunflowers and poppies. Our sweet peppers from last year are still growing and producing right now. I am sure we will do green onions for sure . . . but the rest will depend on how things go. Have fun with your garden - it is exciting to grow edibles!!!

@DianneN Oh - just normal concrete block walls in the back and on one side. We have a wooden fence that has been falling apart (poorly constructed by the previous owner) - and with these last big winds they nearly fell over. The block walls would match the existing walls for us and the neighbor behind us. The side will have a different feel, but at least we won't ever have to deal with falling over issues and termites. Expensive, but will be worth it. I don't know if I have a green thumb, maybe just lucky thumbs sometimes .

I understand! What are block walls? I will look them up. I am sure they will look beautiful and enhance tour yard. You certainly have a green thumb. Hopefully, you will be able to enjoy some edibles when you can. The wall will be worth getting.

If only the climate here would allow for that. I tried growing rosemary indoors but that didn't work and neither did peppermint although I do have a peppermint patch out front.

I'm letting the peppermint spread anywhere it wants, it wards off a lot of insects.

My rosemary is in the house for now. Once it warms up, out it goes. At least you have peppermint out front. My spearmint was removed due to spreading out of the pot buried in the ground to contain it.

@DianneN they do. Plants like the climate so people can easily grow them here. Few months ago, the apartment owner bought plants and placed them near the gate.

It looks like things are going to start high at the auction this year. They had a few plants in yesterday and they sold for what I can go to the greenhouse for.

No, we don't have a garden. We do have a cherry tomato plant that comes up each year in the front flower garden...which is more of a weed garden. I love fresh veggies.

@DianneN Occasionally a tomato will rot and fall to the ground. The seeds grow the next spring/summer. At least I think that's what happens.

I am amazed at your talents. You seem to be so good with this new skill/hobby. Some neighbors gave us some cherry tomato plants. I planted them but forgot all about them. I remembered in time to collect some fruits however . (But the birds seem to harvest quite a bit before me.)

@DianneN Yes, it is. Mine grows fast. When my pot gets too crowded, I pull some out, put it by the bulky items pickup spot, in a plastic bag. Before evening, it's gone. My little community help give back.
