Learning New Things

I have had this car for almost 7 years now, but never bother tried to figure out how to turn on the windshield washer fluid until yesterday . A real achievement. Not only that, I also tried to open the hood of the car and checked the oil from pulling out the dipstick the first time ever in my life (from watching YouTube). So cool to be able to do those tasks. --- Have you done anything the first time ever in your life recently? (I should record those achievements in my diary! I still remember the first time I managed to check the tyre pressure by myself some years ago.)

Well, congratulations. I changed the push button of my lawn mower, I succeeded from watching YouTube... I ordered the plastic piece from China, I got 2 for $1... they asked me $120 to replace that piece.

@YrNemo It was not easy to remove the old one, but I followed the YouTube instructions and I arrived. I also changed the oil in the push mower, I was very proud of myself.

@LadyDuck You are incredible OK. The senior male in my family wouldn't let any of us touch his precious lawn mower. I have my cheap electric one (gift from a family friend).

wow, didn't know that we could change the push button of a lawn mower. When I changed the lint filter for my 12 years old washing machine, I was very proud too. I bought them (2) cheaply from Ebay (a few dollars per). Ordering them from specialists, it would have cost me $80 per. (Wish I have your skill re: lawn mower.)

That's great you can do that now. I can't think of anything new.

@just4him @YrNemo I can check the fluids on my car, and if I lost some weight, know how to change the oil. (I'm too heavy to slide under the car now to reach the oil pan to remove the plug. ) I have no idea how to align the tires/wheels, though. That's what service stations are for.

@YrNemo It would be good if I could do that too. It would save me a lot of money.

Wish I could service my own car (change the oil, check the levels of coolants etc, align the tyres/wheel etc ).

Not recently, I'm at that age where I pretty much know what I can and cannot do and am well past trying anything risky.

I wish I knew someone like that so I could check my cars engine but not many mechanics on the newer cars these days .... I know a lot of mechanics for the classics though which doesn't help me due to the computers the newer cars have.

My brother who is a mechanic, kept giving me instructions and advised me to check this and that in my car (he lives far away from me so everything is over the phone ).

@rebelann my brother is good with older vehicles but his wife bought him new cars these days (he is lucky to have a very good wife). He is very happy but often sighs every now and then since he can't fix a number of things in these cars.

As much as possible, I need to try new things. It is nice that you did something new today.

Cars should be serviced routinely I was told, I hardly use mine so didn't service it at all the last two years. But I keep worrying about it. Thought I should at least find out about the oil quality and the levels of this and that in that car before I take it to the specialist.

@YrNemo That is right. It is also better to ask the help of someone who knows about it.

I am thinking of having my car serviced soon. But I keep having two minds about it. Everyone (in the family) seems to advise me to check the oil etc myself (I don't use the car often). THAT was why I thought of just checking it at least once to see what is what. (I think I will still having my car serviced, just for some peace of mind)

I tried that a few times, using only baking soda. The cakes were more spongy (just what I wanted).

I helped a young relative to log in to Zoom (she needed that during remote learning from Covid-19 time), but I have no clue myself how to use it. (She later became an expert, and ended up trying to instruct me and giving me tips, but I kept forgetting everything she said.)

Incredible really, those YouTube clips. I learned how to change locks, fixing door knobs, etc from just watching them (since all the males in my family couldn't be bothered doing them!). Viva YouTube .

wow, that was so cool of you . It took me a whole week waiting for my solar lights to turn on (I was testing to see if they worked or not before really using them.) By the 8th day, I called my older sister and asked her why mine didn't work (she had been crazy about solar lights 2 decades ago.). She advised me to pull the piece of paper or whatever it was from the battery area out. I did (after argued with her that there was NO SUCH THING) and had such a good laugh at my stupidity. (She confessed that it happened to her in the beginning too!)

i am surprised of myself! Guess the rain came often here in the past so I never had any issue, and during hot dry weather, I just made do with a dirty window (I am an easy going person .)

I still don't really know how to use my Iphone. A number of times I saw some missed calls and wanted to check the numbers (at midnight), and ended up calling some number unintentionally. I was so scared (had to turn off the phone completely because I didn't - still don't - know how to hang up) .

@YrNemo It is so easy to call someone on the phone. You have to be careful I do it often. The red button at the bottom of the screen ends your call.

Congratulations Achievements are achievements. Sure is a joy whenever we're able to do things by ourselves. I remember filling the air into the tires by myself the first time. It's not even a big thing yet I was overjoyed to be able to do it

I was showned how to do that task by a family friend (and it seemed easy then). Yet when I was there alone the second time around, I forgot completely how the instruction was. Lucky that a young guy was there doing his tyres, and nice enough to show me again how to do it. (I lost one cap and had to crawl around searching for it for a while... )
