Paying For It Now

Emmert Falls, one of the many waterfalls I saw last week in Brandenburg, KY. Photo taken by and the property of FourWalls.

It’s funny how things will stick in your mind. In this particular case, a line from an episode of the second season of M*A*S*H, “As You Were.” I didn’t care for the episode when it originally aired in 1973, and I recently re-watched it and I still don’t care for it. But there was a line in the episode, where Trapper turned to Henry (who’d been seen at the beginning of the show, working on his tan with the aid of metallic surgical instrument trays) and said, “That’s a pretty good tan, Henry.” “Yeah,” Henry sighed, “well, I’m paying for it now.” That’s how I feel. Last week, if you’ll recall, I went on a hike at Buttermilk Falls in Brandenburg, Kentucky. Truth be told, I was out a LOT longer than I’d anticipated, as I’d only planned to go to the namesake waterfall and turn around. But hey, it was warm, sunny, and spring, so I ended up walking the entire length of the trail, then coming back. Total walk: about 4.5 miles. Now, I’m an asthmatic, and an allergic asthmatic at that. I figured, oh well, I’ll be sore tomorrow and sneeze for a day, then things will be fine. Um.....nope. I’m still short of breath and tight in my chest from both the exercise and the pollen. And, of course, this goofy weather (damp and 54 degrees today, supposed to be sunny and in the 70s tomorrow) isn’t helping. So, if you could have put a machine on me last Sunday that said, ”This is how you’re going to feel in a week,” would I have taken that hike? You bet! That’s what I take allergy and asthma medicine for!

I hope you feel better soon! Have you taken any Primatene for it, or is that not helpful for this?

Do they still make that? I have Simbacort and albuterol inhalers, and a nebulizer if things get too bad.

@FourWalls I don't have those things. But I sometimes take Sudafed in the morning or Benadryl in the evening.

@RasmaSandra — thank you. I’ve been through this a million times before. Every now and then I just have to stop and remember (a) I do have asthma, and (b) I’m 61, not 21.

Looks purdy. Kind of reminds me of that waterfall (somewhere) that has an "eternal flame" burning beneath it. You feeling better? I cycled and played some sports today but did not get out into nature.

You cycled in your apartment? Did Kitty disapprove? The meds kicked in, thankfully without having to resort to steroids. I’m ready to go make the same mistake again!!! Thanks!

@FourWalls Um, she doesn't like it when I bring the thing back inside.Glad you're feeling a bit better. I may do some back stretches before I relax on my bed.

That is too bad. I know how much you enjoy going out and seeing nature. I hope you feel better and can go again soon, on a shorter hike perhaps.

When I went up Clingmans Dome in the Smokies I remembered to take a shot of albuterol before I started the hike. Then, again, that was only half a mile long (and half a mile up ).

But would you have worn a mask to limit the pollen? I'm still paying for the yardwork I did on Saturday...

I had my covid mask but the problem is a multi-layer mask is a little harder to breathe through than a “regular” mask, so that would have also caused breathing problems.

Uhm... the doctors can't help that you're also crazy on top of being an asthmatic with allergies! I've just spent the last several days in bed with my eyes swelled shut from allergies. And I didn't even do anything to cause this to happen! *sigh* I got tired of listening to my phone reading to me and listening to movies on YouTube. I could hear Pretty outside playing in the sun and mowing the yard. But I know I'll sunburn and end up having more allergic reactions, so I stayed inside.

The doctors can’t help that I’m crazy? Then why did they give me the Prozac?? I’m sorry you had such a bad time with the allergies. It’s been raining here for a couple of days, so that’s kept me inside, allowing me time to recover. It’s sunny and 70 today, so look out world!!

@FourWalls I said he can't help that you're also crazy on top of everything else wrong in your head. It only reached 59 here today and looks like that's the high for this week.

Glad you took the hike knowing you may have some health issues to deal with afterwards. I know people who have certain health issues and will not live their life. They won't leave home unless they absolutely have to. Even their doctors tell them they need to get out and get some exercise, but they will not. We're only here a short time we ought to enjoy nature as much as we can. Hope you feel better

I’m resigned to the fact that I’ll be tethered to an oxygen machine in a nursing home someday. Today is not that day. Tomorrow isn’t looking like it, either. Or, as Faron Young once sang, I’m aiming on living some before I die.

When were doing something and really enjoying it we do tend to overdue it don't we? I did the same with a recent golf outing and my back wondered what the heck I was thinking the next day! I guess if it's worth doing it's worth overdoing

My limit is usually 1.5-2.0, so it was a stretch. I didn’t feel it all that badly until nearing the end of the path. Thankfully, there was very little elevation gain, or else I’d probably still be out there.

There could be truth to it. My asthma completely disappeared when we moved to Florida when I was a teenager. I never lived more than four blocks from the ocean the whole time we lived in Daytona Beach
