You Learn Something New Every Day

I find that statement to be pretty much true. Okay maybe I don't learn something new every single day but generally speaking within a week I've had some pretty "I didn't know that" moments. My latest is about my crockpot. I think I wrote that my old one broke and I had to get a new one. The old one had a hinged lid and the new one doesn't. When I first opened it and saw it didn't have a hinged lid I was going to send it back. How can you use a crockpot without being able to lock it shut? So, my daughter did some online research and found out that not all crockpots have those hinged lids. In fact, the purpose of the hinged lid is to be able to lock it tight for traveling. Otherwise there's no need to lock the lid. All the years I've been crockpot cooking (which has to be upwards of 20 years) I always had a crockpot that had a hinged locking lid and every time I used it I locked it shut. After hearing that it isn't necessary if you're just cooking in your kitchen I tried the new crockpot and it worked fine. So, it's correct you don't need to lock the lid for a delicious slow cooked meal. That's the good news. The bad news is I threw out my old crockpot because the one locking side broke. If I had known you didn't need to lock the lid shut for cooking I could have saved myself the money I spent on the new one. So my friends, that's what I learned and thought I would pass on that little tidbit of information. Am I the only one who didn't know this?

I have never had a hinged lid on any of the crockpots that I have owned. I have a cool belt sort of thing that clamps on the handles and you stretch it across the lid for travelling. It is effective.

@Marilynda1225 Its like a huge elastic band. Our son had a hinged pot, but he did not like it because something happened to the hinge, it was just outside of the warranty, but not really old enough to require replacement, but good ole Mom, she bought him a new one. You know how those good ole Moms are.

I've only seen those belt things you described recently. I'm sure it's the same principle as the hinged lid if you're going to travel with it

I'm sure I didn't know that either although I did know that I need to make sure it's locked good for transport I didn't know that was why that feature was there.

@Marilynda1225 I've always lucked out too. But I also rarely read the instructions when buying things except my insta pot I read those and have read them again.

@Marilynda1225 My mom used to but she took stuff to church dinners a lot. Her last ones the lid just sat on it.

the only reason I knew is that one of the twins loves chili contests (entering). We needed to transport a lot of their chili to the event. We got a traveling crockpot and it had the hinges! that was when I figured it out!

that's exactly what the hinges are for. Dumb old me didn't realize you didn't need to hinge the lid if cooking in the kitchen.

Is a crockpot like a slow cooker? I'm never quite sure when people say crockpot what they mean. If it is then in the UK they don't have hinged lids. They're just lift-off ones. They're a total godsend though. I wouldn't be without mine. I'm actually making chilli in it right now. I think a lockable lid is actually a genius idea though.

Yes @Lindalahuges it's the same thing as a slow cooker. I don't know why they have two different names for basically the same appliance. Maybe crockpot is just a tradename? Anyway, I can't live without mine either and I certainly do love chili.

I never travel around with a crockpot. Anyway, I have one with a hinged lid and one with a regular lid. Both work fine, although the one with the hinge is larger.

When we do holiday buffets my daughters tend to bring whatever they made in their crockpot as it's great as a warming device. I've never traveled with mine either

I always thought you had to lock the lid for ideal cooking. Didn't know it was for traveling to keep the food from spilling

I'm not sure I know what you're talking about, but if I understood correctly, you mean the pot in which the food is cooked?

Yes the pot itself. The lid has hinges that you can lock
