The First Cut Is The Deepest

I call it breaking the seal. Something I do not want to do in a bar (because once I pee it's pee after pee), and something I don't want to have to do with the yard in the spring (because once I cut it is cut after cut). But it needed to be done. And I waited way too long to do it. Granted, we've had some wet weekends, so it would not have been ideal to do it anyway. Cut the grass that is. But I finally broke down and said if I wait any longer I will need a sickle and a machete to get this grass taken care of. Stop, start, stop start, stop, start. Ssslllloooowwwlllly I trudged through the prairie that my backyard had become. But what a pain in the ass. You cannot tell by the picuture, but in some places I kid you not, the grass was more than 6 inches tall. My mower did NOT like it, and bogged down too many times to count. I am spent. But at least it is done.

Our backyard is just deck, no grass. But we still have weeds/vines growing some of which seem to come from the neighbors.

@porwest Did you tell them about it?

@lovebuglena Nah. My thinking is if they don't care about their yard and they don't understand I care about mine, they simply don't care. And they are equally not going to care if I say something to them about it. Besides. They are black. So rather than take responsibility they'll just probably call me a racist.

My neighbors are slobs and don't take care of their yard at all. It bothers the heck out of me.

Friend Jim, if that's the picture of your lawn, it doesn't look that high. I'd like to help you, but it can't be done online. LOL.

Well, that because most of it in the picture is post cut. But trust me, it was 8 inches or more in some spots. lol. You are right about the online thing. Hop on a plane? I'll make it worth your while. lol

My people will probably start cutting in May some time. My hubs can’t do it any more.

@porwest We have "people" for all three homes, it is just easier. My husband has Parkinsons's and last year was the first year he really couldn't do it himself and we have 3/4 of an acre so it was just too much for him even with a rider. We pay $50 cut here in CT and it is so worth it.

Even for me, being I am young, it is becoming a chore. I have back issues that only seem to be getting worse. Who knows how long before I say screw it and just hire someone.

@BelleStarr I guess $50 a cut isn't too horrible, but it seems a bit steep to me. But I have no idea what anyone would charge.

You can see on the upper right corner of the photo how tall the grass is, so I totally understand how treacherous it must have been pushing that mower through that jungle! lol

Yeah. In some spots I would say it was 8 inches or more. It was a bear.

@porwest I think the pet goat is better to have than a gasoline.

Indeed. Next time I might just opt for a can of gasoline and a match and just take my chances. Or get a pet goat. lol

You need a riding mower. Nice yard. We have the boy across the street cutting our lawn again this year. We have 1.25 acres to mow.

@porwest Yeah, it may be time to ask for some help. That's why we have the lawn mowed and have a housekeeper.

My wife has wanted me to get one for a long time. I'm like, "Sweetie, it takes less than an hour to cut the whole lawn." lol. Our mower IS a self propelled one though, and it does the trick just fine. With my back, and a mild case of sciatica that suddenly sprung up on me, and her bad knees, I might hire someone soon.

@porwest We dont have any of that. Hubby had to drive slow while mowing as it was because of how tall it was.

@wolfgirl569 I don't drive. I push. But I do have a self-propelled, so it does do SOME of the work for me.

The back is loaded up with water grass and not only does that stuff grow fast and thick, it retains a lot of water, and so even when it's dry...it's wet. It's a pain because it wants to bog the mower down.

I mow at our home and the church. You're right, once it begins it won't end until fall.

I could probably go every couple of weeks in the front, but the back almost actually needs a cut twice a week, but I still only do it once. lol

My ex mows the lawn twice a week in the summer. He is a little obsessive

Technically I should probably mow the back twice a week since there's a lot of water grass back there and it grows very fast. It always gets longer in the back than the front.
