Spreading Wings: I Can Fly

One of the oldest chicks decided to take their first solo flight. When I got up this morning they were all chirping and I headed over to feed and water them. Once food is down they all gather around and gobble, gobble, until it is gone. I kept hearing another chirp and looked back in to count the chicks. Only five! At that time I started following the chirp and found the baby sitting on the window ledge chirping away. I put the chick back in with its sisters and brothers and it was happy. I've never had one fly out of the bin at only a week and a day or two old! The bin they are in is over 18 inches tall. Go figure!! Photo Credit: © 2021 Karen Gros, All rights reserved

Yep! I moved them. We had to light the heater with the little cool snap. So far they are behaving in new location.

@wolfgirl569 I'm using the top turned the opposite way now. That should deter the little troublemaker.

@kareng I just keep baby gates laying over the containers. Works very well. I have a couple of wire grates that I use while I still need light so it dont melt or burn.

@kareng Maybe the little one wanted to do some exploring and could not find its way back and good thing you came along to put him or her where he or she belongs.

I've seen adults in trees so how did they get there then if they didn't fly?

@sjvg1976 Unless there is a wind. A high wind can carry them higher.

@kareng Made me think of the cats here, constantly disappeared into areas they were not allowed. (One was trying very hard to drink water from a toilet. )

They grow up so fast. That one becomes rebellious first. Soon the rest would follow.

I hope not. They are getting pretty rowdy though. I see them going outside soon to the grow out cage.

Yes, he's gonna have to wait a bit though to make it outdoors. Cool front is a bit too cool for them at night without heat.

@kareng I imagine his little body is still too young to regulate his own temperature. But cool can be cold - I'd rather be warm too!!

Well they are birds. If you clip thier wings that will prohibit flying up.

Since chickens spend most of their lives on the ground foraging for food, I wonder how they know they can fly when they are chicks? It's not like they look around and see other chickens flying! haha

I suppose from testing their limits? Like a toddler learning to walk and going where he/she shouldn't be?
