Repairs were started but balloon was popped

The handigal and her helper a young man in training, he's been with her for two months, came yesterday morning to begin working on the bathroom and doorway and ran into problems with both. They weren't able to get the water valve inside the house turned off all the way in order to remove the toilet and she didn't realize the walls are plaster, which I knew but didn't realize it would change things. She cut a small hole in the bottom of the wall and it has what looks like nails but might be a mesh to hold the plaster on. She could have kept working but he, the young man, wasn't able to do his portion of the job yesterday so we decided they'd return at the end of the month instead. Otherwise I'd be paying both of them for one job and he wouldn't be working the whole time. A plumber will return to replace either just the valve or the area around it too after the city comes to turn the water off. She also thought maybe some other pipes needed to be replaced as they look too be leaking but my brother, an electrician, didn't think the rest of the pipes were a problem. We thought I should check out what that might cost as we didn't want the basement flooding from an oversight. She thought the pipes were galvanized but my brother believes then too be cooler which have been painted. ~~~~~ Today I need to go pay a bill in person, drop off something we got that was ordered incorrectly and then head to my Dr to get some dry skin checked out. But I basically have the morning off other than that to hang here and get caught up maybe.

I am so sorry you are finding problems, we often get bad surprises refurbishing old houses a galvanized pipe will never rust, a painted one is not so sure.

@MarshaMusselman It is better that you ask the plumber to be 100% safe, water leakage is a big problem.

@LadyDuck yes it is that's another reason we decided to hold off. No point in getting the upstairs updated only to have the basement flood. But my brother has also built a few houses so he knows more than just electrical stuff.

I will find out for sure about the pipes when the plumber comes in two weeks.

I'm sorry there was trouble with the repairs to the house. Hopefully, things aren't as bad as they may seem and won't cost as much as they might otherwise. I'm sure I'll run across you here and there on myLot today. See you later.

@DaddyEvil I'm sure he is but will have the plumber check it out to be sure. I found a plumber that doesn't charge an arm and a leg to just check things out.

The cost should be minimal compared to what we thought before my brother stopped by.

In my experiences it’s almost a guarantee that problems will arise when renovating a home. It seems like their is a surprise waiting around every corner. Good luck with the repairs, I hope everything goes smoothly from this point on.

I hope so too. Except we were going to have the soffets in the kitchen removed to have taller cupboards and if the walls are the same that may not be something we should try.

If the pipes are made of copper they should be fine. I may have the plumber check the valve below the toilet too to see what might be leaking there.

Wow that sounds like it might not be as easy a job as originally thought. Hope it goes smoothly once you get the water off and the plumber can fix the valve.

The water and valve issue isn't the hardest part. Digging into the plaster wall may not be too fun either but we don't see another way around that.
