So, I was making some veggie burgers today, and made the mistake of computering while they were cooking. I started to smell them, and one side was totally burned... There didn't seem to be that much smoke though so I didn't open the window...but before I knew it two of the smoke detectors started going off. Of course the cat scattered..and roomie wanted to know what I had done..sigh. Fortunately, it didn't last too long. When is the last time you set off the smoke detector?

There are times when we cook steak the smoke alarms go off. We have them on every floor in the house. That's four smoke detectors. Well, we took apart one of them and can't put it back on so now we have three but that's still too many to deal with when they go off. They don't necessarily all go off but even one is very loud.

@lovebuglena It is a real cacophony when they do.

Most of these are wired in so if one goes off they all do..except today only two were going off.

@snowy22315 I think it depends for far the smoke/smell travels. We don't always have all of them go off.

Haven't done it in a while, but I've for sure done that many times. We live in a small house, so it wouldn't take long for smoke to hit the detectors in the other rooms. I have to remember to turn on the stove vent, open the kitchen window - and maybe other windows to avoid the loud BEEPS!

It didn't seem to be that much smoke so I was surprised they went off honestly

@snowy22315 Right - we don't really "see" the smoke - but the alarms can sense something in the air I guess.

I don't recall if I ever set off the smoke dector, but over the course of two years we found ourselves replacing all the batteries.

It was yesterday when my sister was cooking some meat and she forgot to turn off the stove when the smoke alarm went off with a loud beeps.

@snowy22315 It can wake up sleeping relatives inside the house.

I bet that happens from time to time. I am sure they don't evacuate the buildings over it. They are always disconcerting though.

They can last a long time. Like I said, there really wasn't that much smoke. I was surprised it went off.

@snowy22315 I think they are very sensitive because here it goes off even over the thin steam of the hot coffee.

Most residential houses don't have sprinklers..not here anyway. Also, I don't think that many apartments do.
