My journal entry nine years ago is a simple prayer entitled 'The Serenity Prayer.'
I had forgotten about it and had attributed the verses to St. Francis of Assisi. Nope, not Franciscan but very much like it.
Here's the short prayer: by --Reinhold Niebuhr
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.
I think I will memorize the whole prayer poem.

I agree. Whenever I pray the first four lines, it seems serenity comes to place.

I love that one Eileen, a very true one to live by.
I also love many other prayers.

I am repeating the lines more frequently these past few days. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has turned to a war now - rockets fired and buildings destroyed, lives lost.
I remembered when our Lord wept when He watched Jerusalem.
Let us pray incessantly for peace.

Yes. I only know the first four lines by heart, too.
True, the prayer does penetrate the deepest recesses of our soul, especially when we see so many things get out of control, and we are powerless to do anything about it.
