Change oil and filter was long overdue. A mall guard did approach me to switch off engine, the exhaust could harm passers-by.
So I made a date with Don, the mechanic, yesterday. Surprised he said 8 o'clock this morning. He's usually busy and would make me come back a week after.
I was at the lube bay on the dot. Don was already waiting. Parked the car and opened the hood.
In no time, people were greeting me 'Good morning' - the cashier, the kiosk server, and three other mechanics. I noticed how happy they were to see me.
Looked around and there's not much customers like it used to. Realized the pandemia has also put cars on a lockdown. That's why there's not much job to do at the lube bay.
The change oil and filter was done in no time. Don also made an executive engine check - radiator, alternator - simply cleaned the whole thing. including the air-con filter.
Issued me the receipt once done, and I gave him the change for tip. He exclaimed 'Wow!' at the amount but I quickly thanked him for the car care and told him to stay safe, the virus has already tallied a million cases.'
Don cracked a joke - they don't have virus, only grease. And laughed. I chuckled and told him to keep his family safe.
Here's to all the simple people who help us even in this pandemic time.

Yes, people are doing their parts to restore normalcy but with extreme caution. The mechanics have not even received a first dose of vaccine and they are exposed to the Wuhan virus variants currently sweeping across Asia.
As hope springs eternal, let's hope for everyone's well being.

I second that. People, impoverished and could do with more, are prepared to render us the perfect assist when needed. Am humbled and very grateful.

Yup. He was very happy. That just doubled his earnings for the day, I think.

Yup, I would have preferred and easy rider but our roads are not conducive to bicycles yet, especially for old people like me.

I guess those people need more customers that is why they are that welcoming when one visits their place. I guess all the tip they can have is welcome for them as their salaries are not that high especially nowadays that customers are not that many,

Yup, the car industry has been grounded. I pray it stays that way. I'm for walking and cycling.
I admit though am dependent on my car to get around. Grateful for the employees at the lube bay. Yes, they could do with an added tip, the income is never enough.

Don has taken good care of my car for the longest time, that's why my old car is still in tip top condition.
The mechanics at the lube bay are all good. One was even a mechanical engineer who, when he was a fresh graduate from college, was hired by an American freight company and sailed the seven seas. He narrated to me that his most challenging job was piercing the ice with huge machines in the arctic. Now that he is old, he's enjoying the company of budding mechanics and imparting to them the knowledge.....

@RebeccasFarm That is true. My life depends on the car when I'm out on the roads. Maintenance is important. Truly grateful to Don for keeping the car road worthy.

@jobelbojel Does not happen too often. Car owners, especially SUV's and 4 by 4's are super kuripot. I see them give Don a meagre twenty.
That's only for banana cue.

Reminds me of my brothers van, I haven't seen him even turn it on or use it for almost a month. I wonder when he's getting an oil change or something.

If the van is diesel-powered all the more it needs oil change. Mine is gas.
