Packing is going on apace here as this time next week we’ll be in our new home. We have each been through our wardrobes and thrown out clothes that we no longer need. As we’ve been living on 18 acres and get involved in doing all sorts of manual work, our work clothes well not really fit in with our new suburban life. I’ve nagged Vince from time to time about this jumper which is his favourite. I bought it for him to wear to work about 1986/7 but now it is full of holes caused by sparks from the welder. There are also some paint splatters on it. Anyway, he has admitted that he can’t really take it to our new place and it’s been consigned to the rubbish bin. Between us, we have donated or thrown out at least a suitcase full of clothes.

My husband has a pair of jeans full of holes and I cannot convince him to throw in the bin. He even dares to wear them to bring the garbage to the courb.

@JudyEv I have to think that my husband would do the same, but he never moves to town without me. I know he fears to get lost.

Vince heads off to town in this jumper if I'm not quick enough to tell him to change it.

I got rid of quite all my clothes when I moved and I realized later that I had a heavy hand. Where is this sweater ? Oh, I threw it away. I had done wrong choices. I don't tell that for the sweater on the picture.

@JudyEv Don't laugh : I have had up to 25000 books at home but the storage was messy. When I was not remembering where was a book, I was buying another copy. I did it again on Saturday : I could not manage to find a small USB black adapter. I opened Amazon and bought 2 of the same, in white. 1 hour later I discovered the black one on my desk

Hopefully, we won't regret any of our decisions. I remember once I threw out a shirt then later bought it back from the op shop!! Luckily, it was cheap.

@topffer I do that a LOT!!! I have enough sewing needles to make a porcupine. I'm also good about buying several of the same color thread. Fortunately I don't do that with cords and adaptors. I needed the adaptor for my cell phone and called the lady I had loaned the phone to and she had the cord. I'm going to see her today and get it back from her. Since I moved into a small apartment after my house burned down I'm careful about what I buy. My biggest problem is buying fur for making bears. I buy a lot of Mohair fur and even more acrylic fur. I love real fur but feel bad about animals giving up their lives so I recycle vintage furs and donate a percentage of the sales to the humane societies to help them care for abandoned animals and help them find them homes for them. The mohair is hair that is clipped from the angora goat so for the most part my bears are made from animals that are unharmed in making the fabric for the fur. If you're curious about where Mohair comes from, ask me. It's an interesting tale that I would be more than happy to share with you.

Wow, only a week left to talk to the roos. I'll bet they'll miss you. Are you taking your bird bath with you? I just figure you probably could find a spot in your new yard for that piece.

All my old clothes got destroyed when my home burned down in 2017. I lost a LOT in that fire. I still haven't recovered from the blaze, my closet is full but it's coats to cut down into teddy bears. I used to be a clothes horse but that was put by the wayside. I can understand Vince and his jumper. I have a favorite that I used to wear all the time, it bugged Mom a lot. I even have one now. It's hard to give them up when they are so comfortable and are adjusted to fit you just so....it takes a lot of courage to finally say "Okay, I'll let it go". Well done Vince.

@JudyEv Gee wiz, the poor puppy dog could have used it during the winter to keep warm...or maybe one of your goats or sheep. You could have gotten a few more dollars worth of use out of it. When I was a kid we used to dress the collie we had up for Halloween. I would get father's old pants, shirts, boxer shorts, tie, and a hat. We would get her all gussied up and start trick or treating and the dog would last about half way through the trick or treating (about 35 or 40 minutes) and she would need to go to the bathroom. She would go to the side of the road, find a spot, and squat and wet her pants. That would end her getting much in the way of treats, although the neighbors knew her and still gave her treats. We'd get her home and I'd get to undress her and bathe her rump where she wet her pants and then dry her off with an old towel. What was odd is normally she would dry in about 20 minutes on a normal Halloween day. But if she was being cleaned up after wetting her pants it took two hours for her to dry off, and that was inside the house. Never could figure that one out.

I'm sure a small part of Vince was sad to see that sweater go to the rubbish bin. Downsizing certainly is a time consuming job isn't it. Bet you'll be happy to finally settle into the new place.

Sometimes it's hard to get rid of those old clothes. I have an old dark green heavy shirt from maybe 30 years ago that I still put on to go out and work in the yard on cold mornings. (I rarely do that these days though).

We'll have no need for such raggedy clothing. We won't need to gather firewood or burn leaves. The dirtiest job would probably be putting the greasy jack in place when we hitch and unhitch the caravan.

Sounds like the dark green heavy shirt needs to be upcycled into a teddy bear. It makes it easier to recycle the old clothes if it goes into something you are going to have around that you will love than to just throw it out.

I bet there's a lot of good wear left in that poor shirt, Judy. *shake my head* You're just being mean to Vince! (Pretty threw away a lot of my old clothes when we moved. I tend to wear them until they're rags... *sigh* Just because they aren't "fit to wear in company" doesn't mean there's anything wrong with them.)

@JudyEv It's surprising that they didn't take up a collection for your husband to buy him a new jumper...or slip him a few dollars while he was in the hardware store. I've been known to give away sweaters, jackets, hats, coats and other useful items at the stores I go to. I always feel for the homeless people, a majority of the reason being that I know what it's like being homeless. I also keep some dollar bills in my wallet to give the homeless for food...it's tough being homeless and finding a place to fix some food for yourself out in the open. At least with a dollar or two you can go to a fast food place and get a hamburger or such and have a quick bite to eat.

That jumper served for too long years and it's time to bid it farewell. Shifting home can be a good opportunity to go for minimalism and get rid of all that we might not be needed anymore.. I have few boxes of books and clothes to be donated but I am not going out to donate them. My household help might take a few things when she visits us next time. It is a complete lockdown here.

@JudyEv Oh! I can fully understand. Once we stay at a place for few years, we accumulate a lot without realising it. Though I keep clearing away and donating every now and then, I can see many things in my house hidden here and there which have not been used in a long time. You must be feeling relieved to give away and to move ahead with the minimal that you really need.
