Do you like to braid hair?

When I was in college, my girlfriend had really long hair. One of the things I liked to do when we weren't studying or making whoopie was braiding her hair. When I had my horse, I used to braid her mane, just for fun. She loved the attention. I think "grooming" is a universal form of passing time and showing affection. I've seen videos of primates grooming each other and eating the lice in their partner's hair. Once during Friday "Pretend Shabbat," I pretended to be plucking the lice and eating them from the head of the little girl who had found her way into my lap. A couple of the parents there saw what I was doing and laughed. When I worked with mostly black folks at the drug rehab in Oakland, I noticed that the parents spent a lot of time making braids for each other. When my hair was longer, some of my little black girls in the program gave me little pig tails like theirs. When Horse Jr. grew his hair long, I gave him his first ever braid. I had told him about primate grooming, and he would sometimes come over with his brush, say the work "grooming," and proceed to sit on the floor. I don't know if grooming is an odd "father-son" activity, but I enjoyed it. He told me that I yanked his hair less than his mom. Anyway, I like braiding hair. Is braiding a part of your repertoire? Do you enjoy it? I'll try to find a picture of Horse Jr.'s first braid.

@TheHorse — I read somewhere that non-first world countries are utilizing building materials made from plastic bottles with plastic bags stuffed inside. You talk about something weirdly relaxing, poke a bunch of Walmart bags into an empty 2-liter bottle!

@FourWalls Hmm. I'd rather live in a brick house. Big Bad Wolf and all that.

@rakski Some people even French braid their horses' manes for horse shows and such. I'm just glad I know how to do a regular braid.

When Pretty was young, I braided her hair every night. It made it easier to brush out the next day before sending her to school. I braided her hair a lot when she was a teenager, too... She asked me to put her hair up when she was going out with friends. (I tried to talk her into having a stylist do her hair before her Junior and Senior proms but she always wanted me to do it. Both times, I twisted it into tight spirals and then pinned those into a bun on the back of her head...) When my son had long hair I braided his, too. It might have been an "odd" behavior for father-son, but spending time with them was worth it.

@TheHorse Yes, I did. I was very happy when Pretty told me she didn't need to go to a stylist as she preferred the way I fixed her hair.

Did you enjoy the braiding as much as I do? In the post-modern world, it shouldn't be seen as odd, but some might see it as such.

I braid my granddaughter’s long hair as my grandmother braided mine. Now that my hair is halfway down my back, I braid it and remove them while watching a movie.

Does it give you "naturally curly hair," to quote Charlie Brown's little sister?

@TheHorse Well, it gives me wavy hair. That’s how I roll.

@TheHorse Ha ha! One martini and one glass of vino. Hubs dragged me on a walk around the neighborhood to “freshen” me up. Shabbat Shalom. Our rabbi lives on our street. We snuck by her house then remembered she was at the synagogue doing services.

I do braid my hair. I would look horrid if I didn't... sometimes though I just put rubber band and leave it open to look like a horror movie actor...I am really good at that..

Mom never had long hair, my grandmother braided her hair every morning and she had a complicated hairdo that I liked a lot. I never braided my hair.

@TheHorse I had very long hair, but I always loved hair straight, if you braid the hair, they are wavy after. I often had a long pony tail.

I had a short pony tail for awhile. But my hair was never long enough to braid. I miss my "grooming" sessions with Horse Jr..
