So, some of my relatives recently got together in my hometown. I found out my cousin's wife, who I saw the Thanksgiving before last, has MS, and the cost of her meds was about 8,000 a month..gasp! She has since stopped them though as she felt they were risky, and she didn't want to bankrupt the family, I think was her other motive. Although, the meds may have been covered being in a military family.although my cousin recently retired.not sure about that whole situation but I think they may be covered. Also, my brother in law's brother takes very expensive medications for MS...fortunately his condition is stable. His wife says it is a good thing she loves her job because she will never be able to retire. The moral of the story is Be extra grateful for your and your loved one's health!

Serious gasp! It just doesn't seem right to charge gobs of money like that to people who need these meds to stay well/alive. We are indeed grateful to be healthy, but we can only do our best to try to keep it that way.

That is true..I know that cancer meds are also outrageously expensive.

8k is too much but cannnot be compromised for a health of a family member. Instead of leaving the meds she should learn to earn money for her meds.

That is but being military dependents hopefully most of it was covered. He just recently retired though. From what I just read the free healthcare doesn't continue forever.

@snowy22315 that is good if it will be covered. Do you know how many years it can be covered?

@rakski I don't know, they may not be covered now at least not totally as my cousin recently retired as active duty military. That may have been the real reason she stopped the meds, as they are not all covered at this time. However, maybe she could take some of them and have them covered. It is sad as she is fairly young..significantly younger than I am.

It,s not that simple. I don't think it is always fatal. You could end up wheelchair bound though which would be no fun. I tpossum as well. Or possibly pain or blindness. It can be and often is, a wicked disease.

The cost of living, including medical, is insane. I'm thankful for everything I have.

Yes, it is insane. There are companies and organizations willing to help but still for some conditions the costs seem astronomical.

The difficulty is when the loved one doesn't take care of their own health and could. I expect I'll be able to retire one day but I have to push it off a bit longer because my husband eats too many sweets and he's diabetic.

That's horrible and inhumane on those prices. I've heard that some diabetic meds can bankrupt you, too.

That's the thing, really anything can happen at anytime..but fortunately, overall no huge health problems within my genetic line. That helps! However, that is only one piece of the puzzle.

I have a dear friend who has MS. Her doctor when trying to figure out medicine would be best for her, she has an aggressive form of it, told her one medicine that if she didn't die from the first dose would probably be the best one for her. I have no idea what it costs her per month. I can only imagine. I know what treatments for cancer cost my loved ones when they took them. One friend got accepted into a trial when the chemo stopped working. He was only able to take 10 treatments which cost nearly $2.5 Million before he passed. After he passed the hospital he was in canceled his debt for the treatments, I am assuming because they were trials. I am very thankful for my health and the health of my loved ones every day. I hope cousin's wife and brother and law do well.
