A bartender tipped himself

We went to a Syrian Jewish wedding yesterday and hubby decided to tip the bartender. He didn't have small bills on him and gave the guy a $20, asking him to break it, so he can give him a tip. The guy just took the $20 and put it in his pocket. Hubby did not want to give him $20, so told him a few more times that he wanted to break $20. The guy just ignored him. Hubby couldn't do anything about it and just went back to mingle with others. The guy understood English. He clearly just wanted to keep the $20. How rude! I guess that's a lesson learned. If you wanna to tip people you have to make sure you have smaller bills. Some people are nice and will break a large bill but apparently some will not.

People who thrive on tips, such as servers, will pocket your money if you're not careful. When I worked for Pizza Hut. I would get the odd call every now and again about a driver trying to beg for tips from customers. While I was never a manager, I wound up on the recieving end.... because I was the one to pick up the phone. Not fun I'll tell you. Other counteries don't tip. But in America, it's a huge deal.

That must have been annoying having to listen to that, especially since you couldn't do anything about it.

@MALUSE Are tips included in the bill in Europe?

@MALUSE There are places here that charge a service charge automatically and then ask for a tip.

Yikes. I would have pursued it. And given the dude a smaller tip because of his antics.

@lovebuglena Jumped over the bar and taken his $20 back? Talked to another bartender?

He repeated I think three times that he wanted the guy to break the $20. And the guy just ignored him. What else could hubby have done?

It happens that's we should keep some small note in the pocket so that we may give as tips. That definitely teaches us a lesson that such people are hungry of money and they may cheat you for money

@lovebuglena I have done this with a beggar but he was honest and returned my money as asked.

Definitely. I don't understand why hubby had to tip him in the first place as this was a wedding. If anything he should've asked me or some of his friends if they could break a $20. It's one thing to ask the waiter at a restaurant to break a $20 (or some other amount). You shouldn't ask the person you are tipping to do that.

Yeah. He should've asked some of his friends if they could break a $20 instead of asking the bartender. He could've asked me as well, though I am not sure I had $20 worth of small bills. Hubby also wanted to tip the valet guy and asked me if I had small bills. I said I have a $5. He asked how much I wanna tip the guy and I said $2. He gave the $5 to the valet and said to give him $3 back and he did. That was weird though. I would never have done that. If you are giving a tip you make sure you have the exact amount you wanna tip. Asking for change seems kinda rude.

@lovebuglena Should it have been a larger bill, I would have asked it back for sure. What the waiter did was rude.

Good thing that it was a $20 and not a larger bill.

Totally. If a person is asking you to break a $20 and you don't want to do that just say that I cannot break a $20 instead of just taking the money. Also, I think tipping $20 is a lot.

It sure was. I don't know if that would have worked but never know. I doubt hubby would wanna complain though.
