Unity pulls us together while Divisiveness tears us apart

It is a fact of life to see unity and divisiveness coexisting at the same time. When the chips are down, unity scores over divisiveness but we tend to gravitate towards the brink and even tip over the precipice like in personal relationships when there are choices available to live another day. However on a wider context, the consequences could mean a one way street towards our doom. We know our limits to brinkmanship as a species and that behooves each one of us to do what is right. Nature gives us a new day, every day, and whatever the excesses from our part have not made it lose its goal to sustain life in all its variety. What an example for us to follow! If we prove ourselves ungrateful, then other species will have a field day when their “enemy” self-destructs! Creation thrives in variety and that enriches our lives. Unity in diversity is the way to coexist and find meaning but emotions take over driven by ego and selfishness. I would say 99% wants to pass on a better world but then the 1% is always a threat, the real villain. Maybe, we will have a fairy tale ending with the good slowly winning over the evil to perpetuate life and thereby honor our creator and nature. Do you think wisdom and sagacity will prevail over ignorance and ungratefulness? Image: Unity from free image site Pexels

Unity is always desired. That is why we have the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and, hold your breath, the United Nations. Given that picture, people and nations are never more divided. A racist of a female congresswoman doesn't even know Guam is part of the United States. Scotland is now considering parting with the United Kingdom. Let's not even talk about Ireland. Man oh man. 'United we stand. Divided we fall.' It's a motto ingrained in me as a child. I believe it.

@Shiva49 The world is in turmoil basically because the super powers, in quest for world domination, assert strength via a show of force by land, by air, and by sea. The Pacific is so busy with strategic geo-political positioning by every super power. How ironic for the biggest ocean be so named. Unity, as with peace, is ever elusive. Has the Middle East ever had peace in the last century? Has China given Tibet back to the Tibetans in exile? Has the United Kingdom been successful in uniting Ireland? Has the Yugoslavian nations solved their differences? But it is man's story. History has been judge to man's exploits. So be it. Meanwhile, of the eight billion population of the world, just a fraction is actually preparing for war. The rest are living their lives accordingly. Or in peace, I mean. War is inevitable. Let it come. Till then, my little life is attuned with the rising and setting of the sun. As with 7.9 billion others. Gosh, how these cruel creatures called leaders mess up my mental health on a daily basis! Grrrr.

@Shiva49 Did hear the news Malaysia scrambling jets because Chinese jets flew over Malaysian air space. As usual, the Chinese are denying such accusation. Hmpf! In other news, ships are sinking. Looks like divine intervention. Here's for a better tomorrow, especially for the youth whose oyster has been tampered with excessively. May the pearls bring the children good fortune.

Thought provoking response Eileen, thank you. Well, the United Nations looks toothless with the big powers thumbing its nose, cocking a snook, and doing whatever they want. And they use that as a stick to beat others with. It is like adults expecting children to be in the best of behavior, stick to the rules, but what examples are they setting? After the First World War, it was the League of Nations but soon forgotten, and now the United Nations while the biggies do whatever they want. The motto'United we stand. Divided we fall' is ever relevant But it is a divided world mostly but we have just managed to survive by the skin of our teeth at times! One divisive leader is all it takes to tip us to our doom.

@Shiva49 I just don't get what is the need of wars? We live happily and let others live. Those 1% rule the world and decide what is good according to them. We can continue living just like how we do now.If not for those few people noone would have become homeless, life of many people wouldn't have devastated. Not only war, they are spreading hatred for our brothers.

The main issue is our politicians want to survive by dividing people. Divide and rule is what they do. We were colonized for hundreds of years but we were only to blame. Hundreds of millions under the thumb of thousands? Because we took orders from a foreign power! I have lived in few countries and I can vouch 99% want to be left alone. They own little but want only peace of mind, to be left alone. Let us stop being used by the 1%. If they want, they can kill each other for whatever reasons!

@CuriousGab Yes, the biggest irony is when 99% want peace, 1% want war and the latter sets the agenda! With present technology, it is easy for 99% to regain ground and thereby live in peace. It is time to end all conflicts like my God is mightier than yours when there is only one creator.

@Shiva49 Exactly,What we did in past we are repeating it again. If we raise a strong voice against their bad doings they won't be able to resist. Everyone wants a peaceful life.Noone wants to keep fighting, critizing. Hope Wolrd becomes a greater place to live with peace and happiness.

Yes, instead of counting our blessings and feeling good about living, we tend to mope around with a take life has been unfair to us while others are having it easy. Our attitude decides our altitude with regard to peace of mind.

Indeed it is something inside of us that tells us to care for one another despite what the world as it is, is thrusting at us. Well there are many, even in the higher positions, that are now admitting some things that are done to us are not wise. I believe the common people will prevail over ignorance in the end.

Thanks Ocean Tiara, the common folks are well grounded in the realities. They live for others too and give more than what they take. I hope real democracy will prevail to see past our made up divisions.

@jobelbojel The reality is the agenda of those in power is selfish and the majority is used as pawns. The majority everywhere wants peace but the world is at each other's throats with weapons sold to all and sundry. So the agenda is anti-people and fuels hatred and war.

If we can live in harmony with nature, then we are right up there to find meaning and fulfillment in our existence. I have always lived in cities and that meant my exposure to nature is few and far between.

That is good. I find some clutching at straws, or invoking divine intervention, after repeatedly ignoring commonsense.

There is still a call for the lone ranger type though, as unity sometimes loses itself within its own compound. Some of the greatest inventions, and discoveries have been made by lone wolf types, who go against the push of the crowd to come up with their own ideas. Unity is good then, far better than divisiveness, but we should still cut the cake into individual slices too, according to the likes of each person. Variety is the spice of life, and each part adds to the unity, not takes anything away from it, at least, that's how it should work, if there were no maverick types, trying to eat all of the cake for themselves. Such greed breeds divisiveness. Sharing spreads unity.

@Shiva49 Yes, the divide between the rich and the poor is ever increasing, and is a point of contention, that points against the working of democracy. Democracy, it seems, creates the filthy rich, and the filthy poor as well. One can afford to wash themselves, so they are filthy by choice, through the skullduggery of their richness, while the poor, who cannot even afford to wash themselves, are also filthy, but from no fault of their own.

@Shiva49 Still, many a poor, hanker to be rich, but probably no rich, ever hankers to be poor. Richness does remove some problems of life, but it can create other problems too. We are only our outer richness, rather than displaying the inner richness of who we really are.

Yes Steve, we need the spark too but it should not set a wildfire soon raging out of control, like playing with the emotions of the easily deluded/manipulated. Elon Musk has been a disruptor and some thought he would be bankrupt but he rose like a phoenix to become the richest leaping over others who were well entrenched in their set ways, family wealth et al. Maybe, peace is boring and wars exciting, but that is deluding ourselves. A few can cause divisions even in the name of God saying a few are the chosen children while others are consigned to oblivion. These happened all through our history leading to terrible consequences. No God will entertain those with blood of fellow humans dripping from their hands. Maybe, it is not easy to make life interesting and people need a rush of blood at times like it happens when a few are target practice for the killer weapons that are regular headlines but soon par for the course.
