We arrived a little bit before our appointment time at the Caring Hands Humane Society.
They do not have an open door policy, but come out to your car for all paperwork and to assist you. I do not know if it was different before the pandemic.
We watched other people come and go. The sign on the door says to call and they will come out.
A woman and her daughter (maybe 8 or 9 years old) arrived. They got to the door and saw the sign. Mom had daughter help her remember the number, but somebody inside saw them and came out to talk to them. I was guessing that they were going to adopt a pet. . . nope.
They opened the trunk of the car and got out several bags of cat food of assorted kinds. They were making a donation to the shelter.
That mom is teaching her daughter good things.

What a great thing to do! I always wanted to volunteer at a shelter near campus where I worked but it never worked out timewise. Traffic in that direction was horrible when I got off work and all the way on the other side of town from where I lived.

Some shelters have an open door poloicy, while others are more cautious and are by appoitment only. Our vet won't let people in (or didn't the last few times we needed to get meds) so the wait in your car thing is pandemic-related.

I know some places do expect you to pay a surrender fee.
