From your personal experience do you agree with this phrase. Looking back at 3 decades of my life could you believe my thought when it comes to finances turned out to be, I could've saved more. It is fun reminiscing where I could have saved and imagine how much I could've accumulated by now. So many things that I thought were necessary in the past in retrospect were just waste. So I'm surprised when I read this phrase and found myself agreeing.

No, I don't agree with this phrase because it is ambiguous. Many people would understand 'more' to refer (as an adverb) to 'regretted' rather than to 'saving'. Of course, what is intended is "Nobody has regretted saving more money than they otherwise might have done" (and I wholly concur with this, of course) but English is such that many people, if not most, would read it as meaning "Nobody has been more regretful about saving [than I or you or whatever the regret is being compared with]."

"Nobody has regretted saving more money than they otherwise might have done" If they have saved more than what they otherwise might have done, what are they regretting exactly?

@hora_fugit It's all about English syntax. 'More' can be both an adverb and an adjective. As an adverb it is automatically operating on the verb in the sentence, which is 'regretted'. "To regret [something] more" is the commonest way of expressing greater regret. The construction may be plainer in this example: "[I was very ill last night.] I never regretted eating more!"

@owlwings What does playing possum mean, and what are its origins? This may sound like a random/tangential question to uninitiated but I am sure you would know why I ask this!

No use dwelling on the past. What is done is done. Money is meant to be spent. Savings I have none.

@yoalldudes As Steve Jobs said - he has all the money he could use to get well again but as the monitors beeped, all he wanted was life.

@yoalldudes Nothing wrong being ascetic. Am one in some ways, mortification has been incorporated in my way of life. No complaints. My existence is far more comfortable than millions, or billions more. Each sacrifice is for all the others deprived of a life. Here's to living the wonderful life with love of family and the blessings of our God.

I always want to save more but not much that I can do when I am the breadwinner. So I have to be satisfied with what I have now.

I thought I would feel like I should enjoy my money. But what kind of joy is that that you are happy only for a while after buying and then poof money is gone. The best things in life are free like the sun, a breeze a beautiful weather. I will enjoy that rather than wasteful shopping.
