A hummingbird visited at my house today. Very briefly, but she was there. She made a quick fly by to refuel from my Stella d'Oro day lily. That is what is in the picture. There will be many more blooms. This little golden lily is a small day lily. I learned a trick to keep them blooming is to break off the spent heads before they make seeds. I have one Asiatic lily blooming now as well. Let's see if the birds come for that vibrant friend as well.

That's called deadheading, and it works for most plants.

Yes it does. I was pleased when I would do this for the ones at one of the churches here in town.

A beautiful lily. I have one hummer so far for weeks now. I deadhead my blooms too.

I have seed pods from the ones at my old church because I was the one who would groom them on occasion.

I have heard they do, in fact several years in a row.

I haven't seen a hummingbird in person. Not sure if the spent heads are the pistils of Stella d'Oro day lily.

If not harvested soon enough they turn into seeds, so I guess they are the fertilized pistils.

This one is so prolific with its blooms. I wanted one for many years and was glad I got this one.

Beautiful color, I like those flowers. No hummingbird here, but plenty of small birds.

I like these a lot. I imagine there are other birds that feed on the nectar, as well as butterflies and moths.

@LadyDuck I looked online and there are quite a few small birds that feed on nectar. They also usually eat insects for more nutrition. The pictures were gorgeous.

@GardenGerty I have never seen birds feeding on nectar, but I see the bees and the dragonflies feed on the nectar.
