Package put in the mailbox again

I ordered panties for my mom and expected the delivery to come this Wednesday. Earlier in the day, I decided to check the status of the delivery. It told me that the package was delivered Monday. It was placed in the mailbox. Right away, I went to the mailbox to get it out. I had a feeling the package would be sticking out of the mailbox but thankfully that wasn't the case. It fit well inside. Still, why the heck did they have to put it in the mailbox? Is it that difficult to just drop it on the porch steps?

Maybe that is the rule according to the size,

That could be the case. I have no idea. Now I have to keep in mind that packages may end up in the mailbox and check that in addition to checking the porch.

They asked me to let them know online where to put the packages. I always say in front of my door... I always find them in the mailbox.

@lovebuglena I wonder why they ask if the guy who delivers is too lazy to come to my door.

Do they not understand what you are asking them or is it their policy to put stuff in the mailbox?

The package was likely safer in the mailbox than it would be on the porch.

Not that the mailman knew that but it was underwear. I don't think anyone would steal that. Unless they have a rule that if a package fits inside the mailbox they have to put it in there...

@lovebuglena It could be a rule but I don't know. I just think that ANY package would be safer out of sight than left on a porch :)

@Vikingswest1 I agree but if it easily fits and will not get ruined and will not ruin any important mail.

That is what I was thinking to place packages in your porch instead of a mailbox.

That's what I expected to happen. I guess they don't do that if the package can fit in the mailbox.

@lovebuglena The same in my neighborhood when the mail carrier leaves a package that does not fit inside the box.

I have a lot of smaller packages delivered in the mailbox.

Maybe that's the policy.

@LindaOHio My in-laws living in an apartment building. Pre-pandemic they brought packages up to the apartment but during pandemic they started leaving them out in the main lobby. They've had their packages stolen and more than once.

@lovebuglena Actually I'd rather see a small package in the mailbox than sitting out on the porch where someone could take it.

There are two reasons. One, delivary people don't want to approach a person's front door because of Covid. Or two, smaller packages they put in mailboxes to keep them safe. You never know who would have the balls to walk up and steal a box right off of someone's porch. Before the pandemic, it was a regular thing.

Never had an issue here thankfully with our packages. I don't particularly mind a package being put into the mailbox, so long as it actually fits and is not forced in there.

Perhaps their policy is that if a package fits into the mailbox they have to put it there.

They probably felt it was safer to put it in the mailbox. Porch pirates would be on the lookout for packages sitting on people's porches, but they're probably less apt to check mailboxes. Plus, it's a federal crime to steal mail, so crooks probably stay away from them because of that.

Is it a (federal) crime to steal someone's deliveries from the porch? Like can people be punished for it if they are caught?

I wonder if there is a way you can include special instructions?

That would be good. When you buy stuff online and check out there usually isn't a place to do that.

@lovebuglena Might be something they should all consider adding.

Maybe they think some pets will get them. They found it more secured in the mail box.

I don't know the reason but now I know they do that so have to check the mailbox more often if I am expecting a delivery.
