A resting place for man's best friend

About ten days after we moved to a new house, we attended a horse endurance ride at Ravensthorpe which is about a six hour drive. We lived there when we were first married and later, we spent another four years in the town. We broke the journey each way by staying in a caravan park. On the way home, we also stopped at the Corrigin Dog Cemetery and I’ve included a collage of photos from the site. it is a very peaceful site with some lovely shade trees and nicely set out. There are a lot of dogs buried there now and some very lovely messages. There are several dog/pet cemeteries in our state. Do you have any/many in your country?

I don't know, never looked. There was a section where you could burry pets in one of our complexes. And any other animals that have passed on now are burried in our yard.

@JudyEv I know. Glad we did, when I lost Precious. Wouldn't have handled it well otherwise.

It's easy if you actually have a yard.

What a great and peaceful place. I have seen a dog and cat cemetery together but only once.

It is a few kms out of the town and under some lovely trees. It's very restful.

I have no idea if we have a pet cemetery here but I probably couldn't afford it if there were one.

Here it's all about how much money they can make. To bury mom cost over $7000 which included the coffin of course.

I coubt this costs very much but who knows. You have to contact the Shire (local government) to be allocated a plot then the rest is up to you.

I think the “norm” here is cremation and the remains returned to the owner. My brother has his departed babies and my baby buried in his back yard.

Lots bury their pets in their backyards but I guess this is an option for those who don't have backyards.

I've never heard of any pet cemeteries here. When we had pets, they got buried in our yard.

@JudyEv Yes, I guess that's true, too. I've never lived somewhere that I didn't have a yard.

@JudyEv So how did it feel to be back where your married life began? I am not sure if we have pet cemeteries here. We may have them and II am not aware of them.

Ravensthorpe is a long drive but we have been back there a few times. It's always nice to meet up with old friends.

Yes, we have one not far from us and there is one in Milan. Most people prefer to have their pets cremated and to bury the remains in the garden.

@JudyEv Many bring fresh flowers every week to the cemetery. I see so many people going to bring flowers from their garden every other day at the local cemetery. We can bring fresh flowers on those buried, but only artificial flowers are allowed in the Columbariums, because are closed structures, the flowers rotting would create a terrible smell inside.

@LadyDuck I'm sure people in your country visit the graves much more often than people tend to do here. Some cemeteries get very rundown and overgrown with weeds.

That looks very 'European'. All the cemeteries we saw on the continent were very well tended with a lot of permanent garden colour. It's too dry in Australia to have much colour. Every artificial flowers fade quickly in the sun.

@JudyEv We try to. But the last couple of horses we had to lime heavy and then made a compost pile over them. It has got very expensive to have that large of a hole dug. We were told 500 for the first one we did like that.

It's better I think if you have room to bury them on the property.

No, it not something we do. Either our vet cremates or we bury them on our property. I only have two graves in my yard for Kuma and Doodles which I visit daily.

I've never seen a pet cemetery. It would make me very sad. Our pets are usually cremated after they are put down. Some owners get the ashes back.

@LindaOHio When we had one sheep put down, we were charged quite a bit for its removal. We should have asked first how much it would cost.

@JudyEv I really don't know. The vet we went to just kept the dog and disposed of the remains. We never wanted the dog back. It would break our hearts.

there are a few in the US. The prettiest dog cemetery i ever saw was in Hawaii (Oahu, main island) it was on a hillside and looked like a place dogs would love to play!
