Visited My Neighbor Twice Today

Went over earlier to visit my neighbor. He returned from his vacation. And he did not have a good time. Everything was way too expensive, the traffic was crazy, lines were too long, and no good food. He went to Gatlinburg. His family was there, even his son flew in from New York. He, of course enjoyed visiting with them. But he said he will never go back. Too sad to hear that. But he is 80 years old and does not like spending money. Gatlinburg is more of a tourist trap than it was years ago. Things are very pricey. And lots of crowds this time of year. So, what did I do next? Came home and baked him a peach cobbler. I felt sorry for him. He was looking forward to this trip for weeks ahead of time. His face lit up when he saw the cobbler. Maybe that will help him get over a not so good trip.

I'm not surprised he didn't have much of a good time, 80 year olds don't usually thrive in the hustle bustle of tourist traps.

Yeah, he's probably on SS and not making much money. I know how he feels.

When I say I’m going to Gatlinburg, I usually actually stay in Pigeon Forge, Sevierville, or Knoxville. He’s absolutely right: Gatlinburg is very expensive. I think hotel rooms were anywhere from $250 to $325 a night the last time I checked my app (as opposed to $91 to stay out a little way). The Smokies are one of my favorite destinations (as you can tell by all the times I write about them here), but your neighbor is absolutely correct. Maybe next time he’ll go to Falls Creek Falls State Park near Cookeville. That place is gorgeous.

He had no say in anything. There were 12 people on the trip. He is not so happy right now. They rented a house for the week. I love Fall Creek Falls.

I think the touristy areas of our country are gong to be worse than ever this summer. With vaccinations up and Covid cases down, people are itching to get out and enjoy vacations again. I think way more people will be traveling than ever before. I have noticed our interstate has been bumper to bumper traffic just about every day, all day long. People definitely want to get out after being cooped up for a year.

@CarolDM I'm trying to avoid travel as much as I can right now due to the excessive crowds and congestion, but I do have to travel to Philadelphia next weekend for a paintball tournament. Thankfully, our team flies on a private charter flight and not a commercial flight.

@moffittjc The tournament sounds like a fun trip. Stay safe. Private flights would be the way to go.

I agree, people are so ready to get out and go right now. Staying home because of this. I don't care for crowds or hot weather.

He is lucky to have a neighbor like you. I remember the first time I went to Gatlinburg, it was amazing but that was 30 years ago. The last time we went, we were so frustrated, it really is a little Nashville now.

That's too bad that it wasn't what he enjoyed, especially given how far his son travelled. I'm sure that your cobbler will put a smile on his face, you are such a great neighbour.

I got stuck in terrible traffic one time in Gatlinburg on Labor Day..I would avoid that place on holidays like that. Sorry, your neighbor did not have a good time. Nice of you to make him a cobbler.
