Day 13 Genesis 19:15 And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, “Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.” 16 And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city. 17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, “Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.” 18 And Lot said unto them, “Oh, not so, my Lord: 19 Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast showed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die: 20 Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.” 21 And he said unto him, “See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken. 22 Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do anything till thou be come thither.” Therefore, the name of the city was called Zoar. 23 The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar. Many times, people don’t see the trouble facing them until it’s too late. By then they are doing everything they can to avoid trouble. Lot didn’t know who came to Sodom when he met the ‘Angels’ at the gate and offered them accommodation. It wasn’t until after they blinded the eyes of the men who came to Lot’s home, that he realized they were more than angels and called them Lord. It was then he bargained with them when he asked if he could take his family to the tiny town of Zoar. They accepted his request and told him they would not overthrow the city until they were safe. As Christians, many times you do the same as Lot, try to make a bargain with God so you can remain safe from harm. Bargains come when you don’t have a close relationship with God who promised to always keep you safe. Remember, Abraham concerned himself with the people of Sodom and Gomorrah. He asked God to spare the cities for the sake of the righteous who lived there. He didn’t ask for anything for himself in return. Lot bargained for his life, even though God already brought him and his family out of the city. God answered Abraham’s prayer and brought the righteous out of the city before He overthrew it. Lot didn’t know about Abraham’s intercession for him and his family. He only knew God was going to destroy Sodom and wanted to be certain he and his family were safe from the destruction. God answers selfish prayers, not for your sake, but because someone else prayed for you and your safety. You need to trust God to keep His promises to keep you safe. You need to spend time with God so you won’t pray selfish prayers. Instead, you need to focus on those around you. Let’s pray: Father, help me take my eyes off myself and pray for others who stand in the way of destruction. Send Your Holy Spirit to show me the way so I never stray from the path You set before me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen. Copyright © 26 June 2021 by Valerie Routhieaux Image courtesy of Pixabay
