Challenges Up The Ante

Challenges

I faced a couple of tough challenges in my work life. At times, I felt I was responsible for the destiny of hundreds in companies I had worked in as CFO. Everyone looked at me as if I had a magic wand to overcome what seemed insurmountable problems. I had to be aware of the pulse of many. I did worry the bankers would pull the rug from under my feet bringing down the whole edifice. At times, they were ambivalent after my best efforts. At two places, it was a déjà vu experience. For a few years I was putting out the fire and then things fell in place. The challenges were over and it was smooth sailing. I enjoyed the fruits of my labor but felt irrelevant as the adrenaline flow from challenges decreased. That made me realize why we have issues all through our lives too. We may wish for smooth sailing but that hardly does justice to our faculties. We could get complacent and even prove an idle mind is a devil’s workshop! When I faced some issues later, I comforted myself that those too shall pass as I had risen to greater heights earlier. While I am grateful for placid waters now, I got greater satisfaction, recollection, of tough days I went through. That made me realize we have hidden potential to overcome the toughest of challenges but we need to raise our stakes at times to live through them. How have you faced the tough situations in life? I could talk all day about challenges I have faced. But I am still standing, for now anyway. Great message here.

Thanks, Carol, I recall a few that looked end of the world for me. But soon they were water under the bridge. Now I still face a few, like computer issues, that require an active mind.

With great power and salary, come a great responsibility~ Well, I'm still learning to rise to my current challenge. It was scary but I keep telling myself I won't die from it. I refuse to be defeated either. No matter what I should try my best.

When I was young, I did welcome challenges to prove myself, test my mettle. Over the years those push factors receded, but still, challenges came out of the blue. As long as you feel equal to the task, meet them head-on. You will be richer for the experiences.

I have been blessed not to have faced challenges that I couldn’t handle. I do fear when that changes.

My challenges have come from people who stand in the way - personal issues trumping workplace priorities. I have experienced one bad apple that can cause much damage to the entire lot!

@Hannihar I took it from the fairy tale Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Goldilocks zone The habitable zone around a star in which exoplanets need to exist to make them “just right” for life. Used to describe a situation in which something is or has to be exactly right: I look for the middle ground - not going to extremes in my pursuits. This path is attuned to my overall temperament.

Generally, it is not easy for anyone. Maybe, accepting the reality of life to some extent lessens the stress. I have tried to avoid stress by finding balance in goldilocks zones to the extent possible.

@Shiva49 Stress seems to come to me and I guess maybe because I am sensitive. My cat was very stressful when we moved but we had to because we could not longer live where we did. What is Goldilocks zones?

@Shiva49 All those under you looked upto you like a shelter whenever the problems arised and you succefully overcame them with lots of hard work. You were able to prove them that you are their whenever tough situation arises. You did a great job sir. I believe the problems or challenges come to make us stronger than before. They teach us a lot of things. So instead of crying in tough situations we should try to figure out the solution bravely just like how you did. The accomplishment we acquire over years will always make us happy.

Thank you Gabriella for your uplifting response. I am sharing my life experiences so that they could inspire a few to reach even higher. I am now retired after forty-five years of working but I went for balance without getting too involved with work to spoil my health. I went about doing the best I could and my last job was with a group that lasted thirty years! The major effort was made when I was much younger and at times I felt I was carrying too much weight as others did not have much inkling of how I went about to prop up the companies. Yes, an honest job gives a fitting reward overall and that includes satisfaction and fulfillment.

Yes, I was in places where the buck stopped with me. I had to find my way and come up with solutions. I felt the hopes of hundreds who looked up to me and that was the motivating factor. I stuck to truth and depended on a clear conscience to find peace of mind.

I always try to think ahead, and to avoid tough times. I put checks in place, so that mistakes are not often made, and when a mistake is made, I then work out why it was made, and put another check in place, so it, that particular mistake, will never be repeated again. If, I have made a mistake, I always give compensation for my mistake to others that have been affected by it. This tends to smooth the tough time over a bit, both for them, and for me too.

@Shiva49 When I do make a mistake, others usually cut me some slack, as they know that I never meant it, and that I am an honest person, generally. They know that I will do my best by them, to right the wrong. We get treated how we treat others. People only ask you for help because of the person that they can see that you are too, I would say.

Yes with experience you can anticipate better and that is half the battle won. I too try to smoothen my path but still caught unawares at times, hit a bottleneck. Challenges mean we are alive and kicking When others approach me with their issues, I get some satisfaction too that I am being counted as one who can help.

Thank you. I share what I went through and happy that the institutions I had worked for are still going strong although the foundations were shaky when I started work with them. I never left a concern worse off than when I had joined and that gave me happiness when visiting years after I had left them.
