How in the heck can a building just collapse?

It sounds like the death toll in the Florida building collapse is going to be well over 100. I can't help but wonder how a building can just collapse. Does Florida have sink holes? Could a sink hole have developed under that corner of the building? Wouldn't inspectors have noticed if that were the case? I wonder if Democrats and Republicans will find a way to blame each other. And if Alex Jones will tie it in with the illuminati.

You’d better believe Florida has sink holes. It amazed me the first time it happened when we moved there when I was a teenager. Within a year it was, “Oh, another sinkhole? Ho hum.” It is my understanding that there aren’t basements in Florida because the sandy soil just won’t allow structural stability. And yet, consider that those buildings are almost literally on the beach….and much heavier than a “standard” house….and reinforced with more weight because of the hurricane building codes….. I’m trying to figure out how Rush Limbaugh would have blamed this on Biden.

@TheHorse — it’s perspective. I love that scene in the first episode of Lou Grant, where Lou (who’d just moved to L.A. from Minneapolis) is freaking out over an earthquake while everyone else in the editorial meeting is betting on the magnitude of the quake!

@FourWalls Have you seen the "Are you a real Californian?" questionnaire that floats on the internet now and again? One of my favorite questions is "What do Californians do after an earthquake?" The correct answer is...

It wasn't a sudden thing. It had been judged structurally unsound several years ago.

@TheHorse — there was a lawsuit filed about 27 hours after it happened. First of many, I’m sure.

There should be an investigation where they should check if the structure was faulty or the material used for the construction was up to the mark or not.

The building was "sinking" unevenly since 1990... I am surprised it did not collapse before.

Where did you read this? I've been trying to find more information. I did see it was determined three years ago that the concrete slab that houses the pool needed about 9 million dollars in repairs.

Apparently, some repairs were authorized a day or two before the building collapsed. (But, from what I read, it doesn't sound like the main problems were being addressed, even in those repairs.)

I keep reading about the cement beneath the pool deteriorating. Could be related. But perhaps not.

They should have inspected it properly and that may have helped saving lives of the unfortunate ones

Yes, Florida has sinkholes. I was thinking the same thought about the building.

Yes they have sink holes bad. But I am now reading that a few years back it was found to have structural damage. Never fixed.

And it was never owned by Trump's father? Just another reason to become a Republican.

That is when construction is poor and builders cut corners and tragedies happen, Someone who made it out said she felt the building shake at various times and that there seemed to be mould growing and other crazy things, I also heard about that sinking I just keep praying for all concerned,

@TheHorse if the building could be felt to move I am sure if anyone knew what to listen for they might have heard such things, Usually people feel something odd on a building they just get away from the spot,

Sad, and frightening. We put trust in the engineers, contractors, suppliers, inspectors, and we have no idea.

By TheHorse @TheHorse It is very sad. If a building is not built properly it will collapse. That has happened here too. It is how it was built and not a sink whole is why it collapsed. We sent some to help there and hope that people buried underneath are still alive. It has nothing to do with Democrats and Republicans. There are contractors that like to take shortcuts and do not care about what happens till they get caught if the building is not sturdy and collapses. I know from people that were at a wedding here in Israel and the floor just collapsed while they were dancing. It is so sad that there are those that do not care or want to make sure work is done right on buildings.

@TheHorse It was horrible. To go to a wedding and that happen while they were on the dance floor enjoying themselves and then this happens. I think something happened to either to groom or the bride and cannot remember if they were ok afterwards or not.

@Hannihar I remember watching a news or youtube video of the collapse. I can't remember how many serious injuries there were.

@TheHorse Which one are you talking about? The one that happened here in Israel at the wedding or the one that happened close to Miami, Florida? If it is the one here do you remember what they said?
