Hummingbird Zoomed Over My Head

Finally snapped a quick photo of a male ruby throated hummingbird on my deck feeder. I was sitting on the steps watching the rabbits. I heard him literally zoom over my head and perched on the stick beside the feeder. These birds are lightning fast. I slowly moved the camera over and got a photo. He was looking at me. You can see his bright red throat. Definitely a male. They will be all over the blooms soon. I always enjoy these tiny birds and it is so cool to watch how protective they are of the feeder. My entertainment for the day. In between rain showers. The cats are sleeping of course.

I have never once seen a humming bird perch! The only way I've seen one, is hovering to drink some sugar water

This pole is used more than the feeder. He will clean himself and use it as a lookout for other hummingbirds.

@CarolDM That's amazing! I had no idea that they sit still, for more than a few seconds.

@kobesbuddy Always something to learn about nature. I see him all the time on this perch. I have seen two before as well. But not for long.

Those zooms scare me sometimes . . . sounds like a Star Wars lightsaber . You were lucky to get a shot of this quick little guy - so cute and tiny he is! We get a lot around our lemon tree and cherry tree - but it also helps that our neighbor has a few hummingbird feeders around close to our side.

@CarolDM You're right - no reason to be afraid. I guess when I hear it, my first reaction is that it's something that's going to attack me . For a little thing, it's sure pretty loud!!

What a fantastic photo! I have never seen one perched. Ours are about the size of bumblebees and too quick for me to photograph.

Thanks! This one is on his lookout perch, as I call it. He is constantly looking back and forth for other hummingbirds to chase away. So entertaining.

@Nevena83 They are very tiny and so very fast. The red you see is his throat. Such a pretty bird.

Have you ever seen the hummingbird insect? It's quite interesting and bigger than the bird. I only saw it once at someone's house. I've not put up any hummingbird feeders yet but I did but more flowers they enjoy if I ever get them planted.

Sometimes I wish I were my cats. Sleeping the day away as if the world didn't exist around them. Silly little things. Cool you managed to capture a photo of the bird.

I have said that many times. They can go to sleep in the blink of an eye, for hours. This bird is a challenge to capture. Thanks.

They are super fast aren't they? They are so beautiful. We had one that used to come and hover just a foot or so above my hubby's left shoulder every evening when we used to sit outside on the porch. I don't know why he choose him, he doesn't look like a hummingbird feeder.

They are faster than any other bird. Amazing to watch this one hang out on the perch. Maybe he had a red shirt on, they are attracted to red. Some people will feed them out of their hands.

Nice photo, You are lucky to be able to enjoy these lovely birds, Of course, the cats are sleeping What else would a cat be doing on a rainy day? Unless of course he was Sid who went out in the rain and then came in all wet and was made at me, He thought I had control over the rain,
