The Worst Back Pain....

I think today I have been having the worst back pain that I have ever had. Usually I do find my back hurts a bit when I wake up...but it will go away. Today, it hurt so bad I was almost in tears. Couldn't stand up straight for a while...I decided to rub some menthol stuff on it. Didn't help too much. It's not as bad now....but still hurts if I move/sit the wrong way. Do you have back pain like that? If so...what do you do?

@wolfgirl569 I do have a stuffed animal that you can warm up something and put inside it....so I guess that could work. Thankfully tonight it is doing better.....but I just fear the pain in the morning.

I do. I did a lot of stupid things when I was in my late teens and early 20's. I've had troubles many times over the years and have used several different medications. Some made ME feel better than my back did and some didn't help at all. I even tried pain patches for trouble spots. Eventually, all the medications wore off and the pain was back. Sometimes even worse than it was before. I started using Aspercreme. It would dull the pain enough to get on with my day and I could reapply it several times on bad days. I use cold gel packs too. I learned stretching techniques that helped limit the frequency of bad days. I hope you'll find relief. I know how back pain can ruin your entire day.

@sallypup You guessed it. I get numb toes from it. But that's not my only trouble spot. I really did stupid things. Paying for it now.

@Vikingswest1 Same here. I fought with a horse and yes the old bag won. It took me about 6 months before I could do more than shuffle. Sitting on a hard seat at a restaurant brings out the worse in me.

Back pain is the pits. Warm water exercising is the best but not always available. You can't stand up straight. I know how that goes. Maybe a heating pad then some ice then alternate?

@MommyOfEli2013 Working the body in warm water is safest cause there is no weight on the joints. Warm water soothes the achy parts. I lie on my bed and gently raise a knee to my chest or stomach then put the leg back down, repeat with the other leg. Very gentle and do as little as you must, depending on the pain. This stretches the lower back. Even holding the gut in as you stand and walk strengthens the lower back. I also stand against a wall or the fridge and do my best to stand as tall as possible without starting up pain. That standing is a simple stretch- I have been bent for years now.

Not sure what that really is but don't have that option that I know of. Don't have a heating pad either. Thanks for the ideas

@sallypup Well I do understand that about water....the only pool we have is not warm water though. If my back is in pain at the time, I don't think I would be able to do any stretches. It's probably my bad for not sitting up straight....and with the diamond painting I have been doing I do bend over a lot (need a higher table)

In a previous job I did home care for people with a variety of health conditions. Did a course on pain management (this was 2008ish) and one thing that came up was a tens machine which can be used for back pain. Transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation is what it means. You can buy a little machine quite cheaply but this was years ago so there is probably something better out there now. I actually also worked in a maternity ward and they used them there too.

@Mike197602 So the reviews on it are kind of mixed it sounds like. Would have to depend on what cheap is for me to buy one....also I wouldn't want to buy one without trying it out first lol. But good to know it didn't hurt...just always thought of that is a painful thing lol

@Mike197602 Well I wouldn't expect you to know or look that up; I could if I wanted to. Oh okay, well that makes sense. and yes people definitely do. Oh okay, that is understandable that it may not work for them...

Yes it hurts when we have a severe back pain as it becomes difficult to sit or move. You can try massage by hot pad hope that will help or it unbearable then it is better to see a doctor.

Yes. When it's really bad I have prescription meds to take. Rest is the one thing you need the most. Try heat and/or ice. If you don't have a heating pad, you can heat a brick and wrap it in a towel. Be careful and don't let it get too hot!

Sorry to hear that. That's good you have some meds to take if it gets that bad. I think I rest too much....which is probably my problem. Mine is probably weight related. I could stand to lose almost 100 pounds. Heat a brick? Don't have one of those either!

Maybe you should see a doctor. Heat and ice have helped me in the past. But never had that kind of pain in my back. Could be a pulled muscle.

Don't really want to go to a doctor, I go enough as it is (every 6 months for Diabetes check up). If it's still bad when I go later this month can mention it....I think he says I have scoliosis so probably that.
