Time has come for our potatoes and carrots to be harvested so we dug up some. The potatoes looked okay some quite small looking but our carrots look very, very strange. I wonder what we did wrong.

Soil was maybe too compact. Carrots like a nice easy to grow through friable soil otherwise they stunt, which appears to be what has happened to yours. Potatoes look good though!

So more cultivating then? Yeah I think the soil wasn't soft enough for the carrots to dig in.

@flapiz Yes, needs to be well cultivated at least 12 inches. Can't be recently manured as it has to he rotted right down to fine crumbs, or as near as. Still time to grow more if you work the soil.

@Orson_Kart I will tell my garden partner about that. We are first time farmers.

I think they look great! The shape doesn't matter, they'll taste good anyway. Except maybe the green potato, I suppose it has been too close to the surface?

Yeah it wasn't really buried deep enough the ground. It tasted like carrot and potato so I guess shape can be ignored

@flapiz I got some carrots and radishes from my "garden-veranda". They often also come in weird shapes and forms. We can get strangely shaped vegetables cheaper at most grocery stores here. It makes sense to use it, no point in throwing away vegetables because they're too big or too small for the packages.

@Torunn Yeah I am happy they taste the same anyway the only difference it makes with the food would be the presentation and also it's more difficult to peel and prepare. But still delicious if not for restaurant. I want a garden veranda someday. I told my boyfriend that if we end up living together I'd like a garden space.

They still tasted like carrots but they are hard to peel because of all the bends, knooks, and crannies.

Yeah it looks like a giant stepped on them. The leaves were very healthy so we didn't expect this.

@rakski the only thing I could think of are our garden slugs. But they are too tiny to push.

Fresh potatoes and carrots would be so good. I wouldn't worry about how they look.

You did good job. I don't know how to harvest. I usually buy vegetables from shops only . But if we harvest the vegetables are fresh and healthy. Good luck.

It's fun harvesting root crops! We have to dig the potatoes up as they grow on roots. While the carrots we just need to pull out the whole thing.

Potatoes look good. The carrots do look funny but as long as it is edible it is fine.

As long as they taste good, ignore the [weird] appearance.

Yeah taste the same as a pretty one. I'm actually proud of them, but hoping for a better result on my next try.
