Work Deserves Appreciation

It has been an interesting time as things have opened back up after the pandemic. In fact, we have a new pandemic. People not wanting to work. And so now if you order a sandwich expect to wait an hour and a half to have it delivered. Give your Chinese food and your pizza anywhere between 2 and 3 hours to see it at your door. And wait 65 minutes to get a haircut because the number of working stylists is limited. The sign on the counter at Great Clips apologized for the extended wait times, saying "Due to the unfortunate overly generous government thanks to handouts encouraging people to stay home instead of come to work, our wait times will be longer than usual. Please show extra appreciation to the ones who showed up today to actually do their jobs and provide service to our very important customers who support us." Seems like harsh words, only those words are true. And so I made it a point when I paid for mine and my wife's haircuts to give a $10 tip to each than my usual $5. The ones who are actually contributing to this economy and working hard despite free stuff being offered to them deserve to be compensated, and I felt very good about offering a little something extra for the commitment they are making.

I don't know what people will do once the hand-outs stop. In addation to extra unemployment benifits, families with children are getting monthly payments. Uh.... excuse me? When our power went out, and we ordered delivary, I was greatful to the girl who brought us cold, fresh food, despite how dangerous it appeared going to a house with no lights on.

What will people do? Probably what they have always done. Find something to do to earn an income. Or, at least that's the hope. This all kind of got started way back when Obama stood before the American people, when he was unable to fix the economy, laughed it off and said, "Go write a book or pursue that dream you've always wanted to go after." As for your delivery driver, I am sure they earned every bit of what you tipped. These are the people we should praise.

65 minutes for a haircut is a very very long wait

Can the barber be booked through call or online?

I would not want to wait that long. I'd just come back another time.

@id_peace It was a long time. I have never in my life had to wait that long for a haircut.

I had this fear when lockdowns began and stimulus money was handed out. People get used to "free money" and hesitate to go back to work if more "free money" may be coming. Those that worked through it or returned at their first chance deserve a huge thanks.

Totally agree. Honor the REAL patriots of this country. The ones who earn and contribute something. I am tired of this constant need to coddle the needy and lazy. This current situation seems proof positive of something I have argued for years... The more incentive people have not to work the less incentivized they are to work. Liberals have argued that is not the case for as many years as I have argued the opposite. And now here we are, living the perfect example. We have 10 million open jobs and 9 million unemployed. Something is seriously wrong here and the government needs to end it now. All of it. Of course they won't do it because really what were all these Covid shutdowns all about? A trial run for universal basic income, which seems to be kind of what we are heading toward now.

@porwest With that, comes loss of rights, for our safety. Where have I heard that before? We are also nearing the end of soverignty for our once great Nation. The grooming began decades ago. The sad part is that the very people that are for a Socialist Global system will be the first to complain when the Constitution and the Bill of Rights are discarded.

@Vikingswest1 The thing is, there are so many examples of socialism destroying quality of life, and yet still people think somehow WE will be the ONE country to finally get it right. Ain't happening.

That's the danger. People get used to not having to work and no longer want to. That's good that you were extra generous with your tips.

@porwest It could certainly become a major headache for companies.

I sell parts to the ready mix concrete industry, and it just floors me that I am hearing companies are offering mixer truck drivers $5000 sign on bonuses and $35 an hour with health benefits and double matched 401k plans... And no one is applying.

@JudyEv Ultimately it is going to be a headache for consumers as well. A part of this inflation is due to the higher costs associated with doing business, including higher wages and sign on bonuses offered. Someone has to pay for it, and since businesses do not pay their expenses, but rather recoup them, the burden is saddled on the end user.

@porwest I agree with you on that Jim and that was very nice of you to give extra to them for the hair cuts.

Texas Roadhouse has wait times of 25 minutes at 3:30 in the afternoon with all kinds of empty booths because they can't get people to work. So sad. I'm glad the extra perks have been dropped.

So far as I am aware the extra perks are still in place. For now. They cannot end soon enough. I am all for helping out people in need, but we are beyond that. People need to get back to work.

@LindaOHio I am glad to hear it. Although federal funds are federal funds. I suppose individual states can refuse them.

It is always a good thing, in my opinion, to honor the hard working people in this world. Seems lately "work" has become a naughty word.

I wouldn't really say these words are harsh, however, I don't want to be told that I should give a tip to someone. If I want to give a tip to someone I will and not because I am told to do so.

Once the summer ends and their tans and paychecks fade away they'll be back. A shame they will be hired but that's supply and demand economics. Oh yes, and Biden's extending benefits when jobs are widely available. em]thumbdown[/em] Another fine mess he's gotten us into!!!

I know a lot of people who had good child care before the pandemic hit, that can no longer even find anyone reliable to watch their children while they work. 3 big day care facilities closed close to where I live. I honestly think if some of these places desperate for workers would have an in-house day care facility for their employees, it would solve a lot of problems in the hiring base and retaining employees. I am retired. I have been asked by 2 moms if I would be interested in baby sitting so they could return to work. I have too many commitments and health issues to do that, but the need is really there for so many.
