Thoughtful Gift, Maybe

In my late teens, I had a co-worker/friend who taught me the ways of thrift and discount shopping. The day of a company Christmas party, she and I had a blast shopping for Christmas gifts for everyone. We bought a bunch of little, crazy, cheap things . . . from toys to office supplies to bitty knick-knacks. At her house, we organized and wrapped all these funky gifts - so much fun! BUT then we discovered we forgot a gift for one person. This guy was actually a very disliked employee, but he would be at the party. No matter how much we didn't care for him, it would be thoughtless of us to leave him out of the gift list. So my friend went to her mom's kitchen and from the cupboard she pulled out a Cup O' Noodles. Chicken flavor, I think it was . THAT would be his gift . Everyone loved their silly gifts! Well, all except for the guy we didn't like. He actually threw a fit that all he got was Cup O' Noodles . How ungrateful . When giving a gift to someone, it's the thought that counts . . . well isn't it ?

I pity the guy, why is he being disliked?

Actually I knew this guy from high school. He was annoying then, and annoying at my work. When one salesperson took the time to help a customer, he would go out of his way to say that salesperson was incorrect and try to re-help the customer with their choices - very weird. Very controlling. He did not even deserve the Cup O Noodles honestly.

@florelway Well this was many, many years ago . . . I did not keep in touch with him. But back then I am not kidding that no one liked him - not even the managers. He did not have many friends in high school, I remember.

I would have given him a gift, too, even if he didn’t deserve it.

We were teens, and these were silly gifts from us . . . I don't think anyone was expecting anything extravagant from us. He had no right to complain . . . it was just a gift - and it's not like he contributed anything to the party anyway.

Hey, Cup O' Noodles are very useful! I had a cup of them in my bag on the plane and they hit the spot. (I asked an attendant for a cup of hot water midway through the flight, poured the water over the noodles, let them sit for 3 minutes, and had a satisfying snack/light meal. I highly recommend this when traveling.)

See, now you would totally appreciate such a gift ! I will tell you that many a Cup O Noodles have saved my tummy in my younger days . . . it really does hit the spot! Good idea when traveling . . . it wouldn't even be heavy to carry!!

@much2say It was the fancier stuff, but it's still a lot for what it is. I could get something equivalent at the grocery store for $5 or less (think Hillshire Farms grownup lunchables) and pack it in a carry-on.

Were the other gifts a lot better than the gift that he got?

They were all silly cheap gifts . . . we probably got them all for less than what you would pay for at a dollar store these days. Note pads, toy figurines, coloring book - that sort of thing. Maybe we should have given him 2 Cup O Noodles .

@spiderdust My friend and I were the only ones who brought gifts for everyone. I highly doubt he had brought anyone else a gift. I remember he was super cheap too.

I had a secret Santa and someone switched the giftee with me. No one knew other than the two of us. I gave her a very nice gift basket with all kinds of smell goods. She had body odor so the teacher flipped out and wanted to know who got the gift. I never said anything but I sure did want to. My gift was very nice he sure did cause shame to her. She ran out crying.

These types of people know that most people do not like them, but they do nothing to change their attitude because they think that everyone else is the one who is wrong. Maybe he thought the gift from him was to try to annoy him. They are not you, people like him are angry with the whole world.

Oh yes, this is exactly how this person was. Ultimately, he was fired from his job - I forgot exactly why, but I know that he was indeed fired. We saw him back at the store a week or so later as he picked up his last paycheck . . . he told me that the company would continue to lose people if they did not change their ways (he made it sound like he quit). Perhaps he needed to take a better look at himself.

I knew this guy from high school . . . he was annoying. It is a long story, but he did some strange things to other co-workers and customers . . . in the end he was mean and rather aggressive. Ultimately he was fired - he deserved that. The gifts were from us girls - everyone knew it was meant to be silly - but he didn't see it that way.
