Love watching and playing badminton

I was watching a few games of badminton at the Tokyo Olympics and learned that the object that you hit with the racket over the net is called a shuttlecock. It is made from real goose feathers. There are about sixteen of them in each shuttlecock. I am wondering why it's called the way it is, and why they use one made out of feathers. Anyone have any idea? I love this sport. It's fun to play and watch. Those players are super quick and hit the shuttlecock really fast, back and forth, over and over... Wonder what speed the shuttlecock flies from one player to the other. I remember when I was in high school I took badminton for one of my physical education classes. I really enjoyed it. Haven't played real badminton since, except just backyard badminton, which is played outside and without a net.

I used to paint a court on the grass in my backyard and bought standards and a net. Everyone loved to play here. The kids would have tournaments with their friends all summer long. My backyard is quiet now. I miss those days. I wouldn't stand a chance with the players I see now. I DO enjoy watching players at that level.

@lovebuglena I haven't tuned in to the Olympics like I used to. I'll watch highlights but don't follow it from Opening to Closing Ceremonies. I'll have to go look at replays now.

@Vikingswest1 I don't follow it very closely but there are sports/events I really like watching. Swimming, diving, gymnastics, table tennis, badminton, tennis, track & field stuff... I wanna catch as much of that as I can.

People from Asia seem to be the best players, at least from what I see in the Olympics. Indonesia is one country to watch. I never played with a net except in high school.

Yes, it's very light. Good game. Fun way to get some fitness in. Miss those days when I played, even with no net.

We played backyard badminton with a net, it's a fun sport that I enjoyed years back. We called the plastic object a 'birdie.'

@kobesbuddy I am glad that we were able to choose which sport we wanted to take each quarter/semester. A few times I took folk dancing.

@lovebuglena It is a table especially for playing badminton. When I was growing up we had a basement and put the table there. I have not played in years so do not know if I could play again.

I used to play that alot when I was young. I got pretty good at it. We played in college in Phys Ed. and not to brag, but was probably the best player since I had, had lots of experience growing up.

The last time I played badminton was when my son was around 5 years old. He’s 17 now. I love that game and i enjoyed playing it but doesn’t like watching it on tv.

It seems pretty exciting on tv. At the Olympics anyway. I've never seen badminton on tv outside of the Olympics.
