Do you compare your electric bill with other people

My friend told me he pays $4 monthly for electric bill. Mine is usually $100 a month. He does not have refrigerator, He does not cook food at home. Only buy cooked foods, Only use lights and electric fan. and no other electrical appliances. He said I should stop using my refrigerator. But I said, I can't. I do cook my own food. Specially there is going to be a lockdown, it is good to have your own food to cook. I don't like eating canned foods. It is very hard for me not to use ref since I store a lot of meat and left over food. without ref, I can't buy meat in advance and can't save those left over. I can live without cold water. Since it has been raining a lot lately . I don't usually drink cold water.

I do compare my bill to others but it isn't a very fair comparison as I use little. I live on my own, hardly ever cook food and often stay at work for a week or so as I work in a hotel. Currently my electric as gas is £32 per month and water around £10...that is 44.50 and 14 USD.

I compare my utility bill with last years usage for the same period. I try to use less than I did the year before. I'm not always successful but it helps keep costs down.

I don't keep a copy of my old bill. Those paper bills can add up on my drawer. So I just throw them away after a month paying it. But I do remember somehow the average bill i had last year.

I don't usually compare bill's to other peoples. There are too any differences...old house/new house, energy efficient, and size.

@hotsummer Not really but not much I can do about it. Our house was built in 1863 and on the air flow design made out of cedar. It has NO insulation. So it is cold in the winter and on the warm side in the summer months. You cannot put insulation in as it would rot the cedar. We have several window AC/heat units and a pellet heater in the den. That isn't really fair to compare my house to a brick house built in 1990 or 2020. There is no comparison.

@kareng oh your house has cedar seems a nice house though drawback is you can't put insulation.

Nope I don’t compare any of my bills to other peoples bills because no household spends the same amount for the same or different amount of people.

@ShyBear88 That is pretty good already. We are only two people here using the electricity. ONly fan and ref. sometimes we use the air con. but not often enough. but if we do use it more often it can get to $150 to $200. We use washing machine once a week. It has no dryer. only spinner. I think your electricity cost there is cheaper considering you have many appliances .

Sometimes I compare costs of electric and gas bills with other people. When their bill is higher than mine, I tell them what I'm doing differently than they are so they can lower their bill, maybe... (Every house is different. The bills are different, depending on how many people live in the house and the activities those people do in their house.)

yes i do ask also to learn from them. But sometimes it is just too impractical for me to do what they do. as indeed we have different needs. but still i consider their advice . I may do them also but not for now. My friend lives with his brother only also in the house. So his situation in life is simlar to me. only two people in the house. why do you compare gas bill. we don't get billed for gas here so i am not familiar with that. we just buy our own gas and connect it to our stove.

That's indeed a small amount for electricity but actually try to analyze she has no refrigerator, so if only lights and few appliances that still high. Are you using led lights? Our bill is around 70 dollars with 2 refrigerators, 1 freezer, 1 chiller, being the ones that consume more power.

well i think she pays only $4 for electricity not $15. i should edit my post. yeah $15 would still be high if that is the case. I just remember it was just 200 pesos only. so $4 i think.

Our electricity bills are also on the higher side than some folks whom I talk to. Yet we have extra air conditioning charges in summers plus fans and lights in different rooms. We have lower bills in winters because fans and AC are off then.

I don't really do that. compare my bill I mean. I might compare it to other places I've lived and see where I can improve. But, that's about it.

oh, then. you are contented not knowing if others do pay more or less.

I don't think it's fair to compare bills of ours with others because every one has their own living style like my younger brother who lives on the top floor keeps his AC on for approximately 12-14 whereas I keeps it ON for approximately 8-10 hours so obviously his bill would be more than ours.

Well I'm comparing with others just to see if there's something wrong with my appliances or the way i use it that may significantly increase ny electricity bill which should not be. Apparently there something wrong indeed on my ref and ac But since you and your both live on same house then no need to compare

I don't usually compare my electric bill with somebody else's because it will only cause negative feelings for me and I would start to over think especially if and when my bill is bigger. I much prefer keeping it to myself for my sanity and peace of mind.
