We met a Scottish lassie some years back

I was searching for ‘Achmelvich, Scotland’ as MrGoodieFoodie ( @JimBo452020) has been writing about his holiday experiences in Scotland. Our son ‘woofed’on the west coast in the late 1990s. He was based just outside a village called Achmelvich. WOOF stands for ‘willing workers on organic farms’. We switch now to the Nullarbor Plain in Australia. There was a Scottish girl serving in one of the road houses, and she and Vin were chatting about the west coast of Scotland and Lochinvar was mentioned. The girl said she was from near there but she hadn’t met anyone who had ever heard of her village. It turned out the place was ‘Achmelvich’. The girl was blown away and thrilled to bits to learn that we’d been there. She was a very long way from home. The photo is from the croft where our son was working. There used to be a small mill here. If you look carefully, just to the left of the circular ruins, you might be able to see a grinding stone.

There are many lovely places in the world. This little area seemed so remote and yet we met a man who was catching eels in the little river. I couldn't imagine there had ever been a mill there.

@DocAndersen I can't really imagine eating an eel or even handling it.

Oh, that’s so beautiful. Wouldn’t you love to just sit there for hours and soak in the beauty??? And you’re right, you never know! It’s a small world. I ran into a couple at a restaurant in Key West….well, guess where they were from: Kentucky, just like me!

It was quite a walk to get to the place. Our son had stumbled upon one day when he was out hiking.

@JudyEv — with those long treks you really have no choice but to sit for hours and enjoy the beauty (and catch your breath!).

It is a nice feeling to be thousand of miles from home and to meet people who visited the place where you lived. I can see the grinding stone.

She must have found that service station so remote and quite desolate after what she'd been used to in her home environment.

Woof is a great term, isn't it? Couch-surfing is another one - very descriptive. lol

The Grinding stone is visible but with some effort. I recently saw a couple of videos where the host drove through some Scottish roads and he found the sights & views much more spectacular than those in some of the European areas he traveled. Achmelvich is obviously much less known as compared to Glasgow / Edinburg or even Inverness. And by the way I saw a city named Perth in Scotland as well !
