Whats the point in joining gangs?

This one kid I knew said "protection". Thatt was the stupidest thing i've heard. I mean if you join a gang then u gonna need the protection because you are going to have rival gangs coming and tryin to kill you and for what, jut because your in a different gang.

To just be a part of something is my guess.
Some kids don't have families or friends, so joining a gang can fill this void for them.
