On Starting My Own Blog

I know a lot of people don't read book reviews on here. I have heard it said and I can tell by the comments that people just don't read them. It seems that's all I write about. I have become grossly involved in the "bookstagram" world on Instagram. I considered starting my own book review blog but here is why I don't think it is right for me. 1. I don't write good reviews. I don't want to give anything away so I just write the synopsis from the back of the book (which is perfectly fine and legal - a book review blogger I highly respect does it). 2. I give my opinion only, which is really what you're supposed to do I guess. But I can't say much more than I liked it or I didn't like it. Someone on one of my reviews here asked me "WHY" I liked it. I couldn't even answer that question. (Don't ask me what my favourite book is either). 3. Time. I'm already so wrapped up in bookstagram that I don't have time to read let alone write. I have been listening to the booktubers and have learned what readers want. I came up with a few adds for my current novel and have written a ton of notes for my next one. I need to focus on making those changes and start submitting my manuscript. Because... my real goal is to be a published author, right? 4. Would I really make any money off my own blog? You really have to gain a good following which could take years. I have been doing bookish stuff on Instagram for 2 years and have just over 200 followers. One person announced they have been on "bookstagram" for 3 months and have 2,000 followers. How? How do they have time to post, re-post and engage with others as well as read a book a day? So I will continue to post my reviews on myLot, as well as Goodreads and Instagram, but I will not start my own blog. I have enough on my plate that I am not doing. I hope more of you will take the time to read my short reviews here on myLot.

Me too. Especially since I have a good idea for the next one and I still have my very first novel that needs major editing gathering dust in the basement. Kicker is they are 3 different genres. Don't know how agents and publishers will like that.

@patgalca You don't have to stick to one genre.

@BarBaraPrz I hope not. I do have alternate pen names I can use if I have to.

Hi there. It's my first time reading your post on mylot. I also wish to open a blog. But since I'm just a college student, it's better to wait. If you want to open a blog where you would share about history and student's stuffs, where would you open? Just asking.

What you want is a free site. Blogspot seems to be the popular but basic blogging site.

@Anqaya I really have no idea. I have a blog on blogspot that is for my writing group. I didn't set it up. I have seen other blogs there. I think others cost money. But I really haven't looked into it since I am not interested in doing so.

If you're already doing a lot, it's certainly sensible not to start something else. I understand the difficulty you have writing book reviews - when studying for an English degree, I had to do that sort of thing. Honestly, you don't always know why you like something. I did find I was having to sort of exaggerate and almost make up things because I couldn't just write 'this book was boring' or 'I chose to review it because it was the only author I'd heard of from the list' I don't know anyone in real life who makes money from a blog. I have a bit of traffic to mine, which occasionally brings traffic to a writing site. That site pays for reads, and I've made $100 in 3 years!

Hello there! Hmm... where to start? I have an instagram but I really have no idea how to use it. I didn't realize there was a "bookstagram" there. I am familiar with booktube though. I have followed a number of booktubers and watched some of their videos... Anyway, you say you've considered to, but decided against starting a book review blog of your own. I, on the other hand, already have a blog... (Actually, I have many blogs for many different things... ) But, yes, I have a blog that was supposed to be particularly for book and movie/tv show reviews. However, I am prone to starting things and not following through, so that blog has long been not updated. Though every now and then, I feel an urge to post something new... then disappear again. I don't think I have any followers there anyway... I do understand and relate with the reasons you've listed. Except perhaps for the one about needing to focus on my manuscript because... i don't have one. I am not a writer myself. Just someone wanting to read more. But time is also an issue, just nothing to do writing manuscripts. I also don't feel I would write good book reviews, mostly because I probably don't know how to do book reviews in the first place. I'm pretty sure an actual book review is different from what I have in mind, which is pretty much, as you said, just whether or not I liked it. And then there are the spoilers. Of course, you don't want to give too much away... But for that, I have this idea that maybe it's ok to do two types of reviews (this goes for movie/tv show reviews as well). One is a non-spoilery review that contains just general stuff, and the other a more detailed, spoilery review... In any case, the decision I came to is also to just post stuff here on mylot. Because at least here, my post might earn a few cents. Posting on my no-follower blog will not likely lead to anything. I should expect, though, that most of the responses I will get here are the "I haven't read/watched that yet." types. And I should probably keep it short (not an easy thing for me to do, if you haven't noticed yet ) because most people don't have long attention spans. Anyway, I've rambled enough. Right now, I'm reading the first book of that series you mentioned. I decided to go with Solace Island first before Runaway Heiress. If you posted a review of Solace Island here on mylot, I will probably look for it after I've finished with the book. Oh, by the way... what is your favorite book?
