Proofreading must be a terrible job. I understand, too: you look at things for hours on end, and eventually every letter and every word begins to look the same. But this isn’t War and Peace, this is a product package. I don’t know if you’ve seen this, but there’s a thing that occasionally floats around on Facebook that says the human brain is capable of “un-scrambling” letters in words to decipher the message, no matter how many typos are in the message. I suppose it’s true: I know I’ve read a number of things as one thing when it said another just because I was “skimming” instead of paying attention to each word. When I was in the store the other day this didn’t exactly jump off the counter yelling, “Look at me! I have a typo!!!” It was just sitting there on the shelf with the rest of the items. I don’t know what caused me to look, but I saw this product. It’s an inflatable serving table. The package says that you can fill it with ice and keep your food cool on ever the hottest days. Huh???? EVER the hottest days? That’s what it says. If you look at the picture you may not have even noticed that it didn’t say EVEN the hottest days. Fear not. When you fail proofreading 101 the US government will give you a job as a proofreader. Heck, maybe even supervisor!!! Talking Heads singing about a book that hopefully didn’t have typos in it:

It could also be that whoever proofread that did not have English as their first language. And maybe thought that "ever the hottest days" is what was actually meant. I mean, it would have been more obvious if the mistake was evem or eveb, etc. But ever is also a word. And I guess, a non-native speaker could think that maybe "ever the hottest days" is a phrase that could make sense.

That is plausible. It’s also plausible that the script was written in cursive and the teenager doing the job couldn’t read cursive!!

See what I mean????? I corrected it, but I really should have left it, given the subject matter of the discussion. Thanks!

@FourWalls I wondered if it was intentional.

My common error is using the same word in a following sentence.

@41CombedaleRoad I often type too fast and put eg 'can' instead of 'can't so I end up with the opposite meaning of what I wanted.

I used to be a proofreader. It is true, many people automatically ;move around letters in their mind to make the word make sense. Read over and over you know there is something wrong but you brain tends to tell you it's ok.

Proof reading needs to be done at least twice, with a gap of 12 hours between it.

In typing class in high school our teacher said to read the sentence backwards, right to left, and the errors would pop out more readily.

I have never been a proof reader although I did work for a solicitor who regularly gave me things to proof read. The print was very small. It resulted in me getting spectacles so that I didn't strain my eyes.

Right, I was reading the word "inflatable" over and over to make sure it's spelled correctly. Totally overlooked the "ever" part.

It is so important to post spelling everything correctly so I always use my Grammarly. That is terrible to sell a product with a typo on the packaging not good at all.

Were there any other typos on the package? If so, hopefully they weren't product dimensions. At least with this typo you can still understand what they are saying. Sometimes with typos you can't.

What gets under my skin are posts here that have a dozen typos in them. They aren't that long, folks. Take a minute and read them over before hitting that button! Sometimes I can't even figure out what the topic is.

Shouldn't have mentioned it out in the post, and let the viewers figure it out.....
