Day 71
1 Samuel 8:4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,
5 And said unto him, “Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.”
6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel prayed unto the LORD.
7 And the LORD said unto Samuel, “Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.
8 “According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.
9 “Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and show them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.
People don’t like to be different from their peers. They act like them, dress like them, wear their hair like them. They mimic their peers and celebrity heroes in every way.
Israel wanted a king to be like the surrounding nations. They went to Samuel when he was old and demanded he give them a king. God told him to listen to their voice because they rejected Him, not Samuel.
As Christians, you are not to be like people who act contrary to God’s Word. Instead, you are to take your example from Jesus Christ, who humbled Himself, and became like you so you could relate to Him and know that being a Christian isn’t difficult but rewarding.
Matthew 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. (KJV)
John 13:15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. (KJV)
1 Peter 2:21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: (KJV)
1 John 2:6 He that said he abides in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
Philippians 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. (KJV)
Jesus is our example. Being a Christian isn’t easy because Satan will come against you and do everything to destroy your relationship with God, but it is worth being a Christian because the reward is eternal life.
Who is your example?
Let’s pray: Father, help me look to You and not the world as my example in how I need to live my life. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
