Why would I spend $7 to have a pretty card?

One of my financial cards sent me an email the other day reminding me to choose a design for my card before it gets renewed and sent out automatically. I knew that they'd charge me something, why offer something like that if they didn't expect to be paid for it? $7 fee for just getting a new design on the card. $7 for practically changing the color of the card and that is it.
How ridiculous. To each their own and I know I've certainly wasted money like that before, but I do not see the point in getting a customized card.
Do you?

Nope, I'd never spend $7 for a different color or design on a card.

What a waste, right? These things should be free.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yes, they SHOULD be free but people are turning everything into a scam! Out of your pocketbook and into theirs

I have a Capital One card. Years ago they had this feature (maybe they still do today) where I could choose an image to have on my card instead of the one that it comes in. It was free of charge, so I uploaded my own image I wanted to use. I would never do that if they charged me for it. I can live without a new image.

The company I use is for credit rebuilding or credit establishing. I was surprised they wanted to charge.

@lovebuglena Right, they made that plain and obvious. I would have been angry otherwise.

@ScribbledAdNauseum At least you knew they were gonna charge you before you actually went along with it.

Heck no! The one place I might pay a nomimal fee to for that though is paypal, because I have two paypal debit cards one for my business card and the other for a pesonal card. Same color. always getting them confused. I would pay them a buck or two for a different color card,,,not not 7 that is ridiculous!!

Oh right, I could see that.
What if you put a splash of nail polish on the front of the card? That way you could identify them better?

@snowy22315 That would be nice. Maybe they do it? I don't use paypal debit so I don't know.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I remember I used to do that with checks . . . it was fun to get themed checks and change it when it came time to get new ones. But for a plastic card, meh.

Right! This is coming from a credit card company designed to help people with their credit. I was a little surprised to see the offer, but knew it was too good to be true. $7 is too steep.

Yes, referring to a credit card as financial card.

@Sojourn You're right. The only time people would see it is when the card is pulled out of the wallet. So many people use apps now and scan their phone at checkout.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Hmm, well, it is not worth any fancy design if you are not about to flaunt it, but that is highly an unlikely scenario.

That's really ridiculous. For them it's just for the income they could generate with it

No, I don’t get the cool design. I just get what ever is the free colors or patters they have other then that I really don’t want to pay anything because I’m not gojnf to be looking at it. If it’s a special card where the design they you pay for goes to a donation I might do that but haven’t.

@ScribbledAdNauseum yes, they don’t do the donations ones to often of course but I’ve seen them up a few times never when I need a new card of course.

Right, I hadn't thought of cards that do it and donate to a charity. I'd be more open to do that as well.

Seems like such a waste, doesn't it? I could understand if it gave extra benefits, like "Upgrade for $7 and get 1% cashback with grocery purchases going forward."

True. It's fun to look at what designs they have. This company had few designs and more just colors.

It costs them nothing more to give you a different color. It's just a gimmick to make $7 off each customer.
