Making the most of September

Greece

I decided that this month has got to bring a few changes into my daily routine. The lockdown is ongoing but the heat is beginning to lessen. It is time to wake up, shake up and cheer up! The first step was to go swimming again. It was too much of an effort to go there during the heat wave. It was too hot to enjoy the sun. We went on Monday and on Wednesday, arriving at 9 a.m. and staying for an hour and a half. That means an empty beach and the sea almost entirely to ourselves. It was wonderful to swim and float and then relax for a while and watch as people began to gradually arrive, some with small children, others retired people, after that we reluctantly returned home but with little enthusiasm to tackle the usual round of house work etc. Today was the weekly shopping event, but I opted out today and left it for my husband to do on his own. Not my choice but the housework was mounting and I needed the energy I have in the morning to catch up . The price I had to pay for the mornings I spent relaxing in the sun. My husband and I are hoping to go swimming again tomorrow. We can't go away for a real holiday but we are trying to make some changes in routine while the weather remains pleasantly warm. It is hard to have a holiday from home, there is always waiting jobs. We are going to keep trying though - for as long as the weather permits.

That's nice that you are able to go swimming again now it's a little cooler. Consistent hot weather can be very tiring.

I have spent most of my life in England where consistent hot weather is rare. So this heatwave in Greece has proved difficult to cope with. I would rather be too cold and put on more clothes, than too hot. Removing clothes does not cool down an overheated body!

@41CombedaleRoad I agree. I'd rather have the cold than extreme heat.

I have what it takes to usefully and merrily spend my day right here at my house The pets, the kitchen, the garden, the computer, the tv, the mobile all these devices keep me busy and merrily on my toes

Good for you, that sounds like you are enjoying the good life in India. I enjoy all the same benefits but I do like to get away from the house, the pets and the garden for an hour or two sometiimes.

Wow! That is simply wonderful - threading and floating in the waters. Definitely relaxing and rejuvenating for the tired body. Good you have a husband understanding and kind to relieve you of more tasks, considering the flurry of home chores that never ends that you already have to attend to. I live in an archipelago with beautiful beaches. But it has been a dream to dip in your waters.

@41CombedaleRoad Floating is therapeutic. Relaxes the mind and the spirit. Salt waters in itself is healing. Much in the same boat here. I live on the mountain side of the archipelago. A good one and a half travel to a white sand beach.

@eileenleyva Floating is special, no need to wonder about whether the body is getting enough exercise while floating. In a way it is like our minds are floating too. When we swim we are looking forward but when we float we are looking upward - and the sky is usually blue.....

I do enjoy swimming when the water is calm and floating is even better for relaxing. But floating isn't giving me much exercise. I just lie back and the sea does the rest. The beach her is not beautiful. I think we would have to go to an island for long clean sandy beaches.

Today has also been grocery shopping day for us. We go very early in the morning to avoid people. In which area of Greece is this beach?

The area is Oropos. It isn't much of a beach as it is narrow and stony and near a road. However once I paddle in (wearing beach shoes) it gets sandy very quickly. It is not a tourist attraction but lots of locals use it and there is a much larger beach closer to the town. That is steep and it gets crowded. So this little beach suits us. The water is clean and sometimes we swim with a few fish.

@LadyDuck You are right, it it flows between Evia and the mainland in the part known as the Euboen Gulf. The view across to Evia is lovely because of the mountains of Evia which are viewed better from here than from the island itself. My photo above taken from the beach looking across to Evia.

@41CombedaleRoad The most important is to have a quiet beach with not too many tourists, this seems like a perfect spot for locals. The area is on the Aegean Sea I think.

It's good that you are enjoying your swimming. I haven't been swimming in years!

I can understand that because the sea is not quite so inviting in England. It is years since I swam in England and even then I think I just paddled. At present the sea here is warm, clean and calm and very inviting.....

@41CombedaleRoad Well, when I did swim, I swam in a swimming pool, not the sea. I think I went paddling in the sea when I was younger, but I've never swan in the sea.

@sharonelton I only remember swimming in a pool but do have a few memories of paddling in the sea and better ones of looking at pools in the rocks.

We are planning to enjoy it for the next four weeks. After that I will not be able to go swimming for a while due to a cataract operation.

@41CombedaleRoad Unfortunately the wind came up on the third swim and we are not strong swimmers so that is the end of it for now. The forecast is for it to warm up again and hopefully the wind will drop.

Where in Greece is this beach and how far is it from where you live?

10 minutes from the house by car. It is in an area called Oropos. It is not a tourist attraction but the local people enjoy it.
