Compliment or criticism?

Last week my husband Dale and I took a day trip to Raleigh. Early that morning he had a medical test on his gallbladder. Possible surgery... Then we drove to Raleigh, enjoyed looking through some thrift shops, did some other shopping, then ate ribs at our favorite Shane's Ribs. While we were at the restaurant (around 3pm so we were just about the only ones there at that time of day), the lady who took our order was also near the drink machine, so we exchanged a few words of conversation. Even though she had on glasses, I saw she had the most beautiful shade of blue eyes I've ever seen! I have blue eyes, but that color was just so bright and strong, not pale or green. I even asked her if she had on colored contacts. Of course she didn't, she was wearing glasses. When she came over to bring our food, my husband even said, "Your blue eyes really are pretty." I told him I hope she didn't think I was weird. I just believe if you see or hear or read something positive, you should say so. We're often too quick to criticize, but slow to compliment. And it has to be sincere of course. Not flattery. Are you more quick to do one than the other? We can't really know how much an authentic compliment can mean to someone. I still remember times like that and they really made my day.

Years ago I was being served by a shop assistant who had violet eyes. I complimented her because I had never seem violet eyes before and they were truly remarkable. I have never forgotten that and I have never seen violet eyes again.

Such an uplifting post. I do give compliments now, to other women - not men. There was a time I received them, but now I am what others might call 'elderly' I appreciate that it is better to give than to receive. I compliment my friends when they look different or have made effort with their clothes or their hair etc. My friends are a little younger than I am but at that certain stage when women only get compliments from their nearest and dearest - if they are lucky!

As I like to receive a compliment, I am also quick to make a compliment. I try to avoid to criticize, we often do without knowing the situation of those we are criticizing.

@1creekgirl It is too easy to criticize without knowing the situation.

That's very true. We don't always know what someone may be going through.

I hope your husband;'s issue is alright. Gallbladder surgery isn't too bad, and I even needed to have "big slice" surgery. I saw a video on Facebook of people responding after being called "beautiful". Amazing to see people light up. I think it's nice to compliment people

I'm glad gallbladder surgery is much easier now, but sorry you had the bad kind. Was your recovery good? Everyone needs a kind word or compliment sometimes.

Years ago, a young man probably in his twenties was standing next to me in Walmart and he asked if he say something to me. I had no idea what it might be, lol, but he said, "You are so pretty." I told him how sweet that was and that it made my day.

I will compliment people when given the chance and I try to avoid criticizing, there is enough negativity in the world. I am sure she appreciated the compliment.
