Day of Atonement

Tonght all over the world Jews will be starting their fast of Yom Kippur which is the Day of Atonement. What that means to us is that our G-d decides during this very reflective fast day who lives and who dies. So I will not be here tomorrow and will be getting off the computer before 6 pm tonight to get ready to begin my fast and stop drinking and can do it about 26 hours later. So do all those that are not affected by our holidays have a good one. Yom Kippur or the Day of Atonement is a very serious and solemn day and it is spend reflecting on our past year and fasting and praying and not eating or drinking anything is how we fast. There are two major fast days in our lives and this is one and it is a very very hard day. Take care all of you.

@prashu228 You probably never heard of this because you might not know anything about our religion and customs. I talk to my G-d all the time. We have many fast days so I do know what fasting does for us. It is part of my religion to fast.

Whenever I hear " Yom Kippur " I'm always reminded of the Yom Kippur war, I was in high school back then and it was big news, we all knew something terrible was happening. Thank you for telling us the real significance of the the word.

@louievill In 1973 on Yom Kippur Israel did have the Yom Kippur War and we will always remember that too but the day itself is our day of reflection and fasting and praying and not eating or drinking anything for about 26 hours and then we can go back to eating and drinking. Yom Kippur is The Day of Atonement in English where we atone for our sins and where our G-d decides who will live or die. It is a very holy day.

@DianneN Thanks for asking. It was an easy fast. The only fast I have trouble with is Tisha B'Av. I do not know why but I do. It is on the same principle as Yom Kippur but I guess because I give up a lot for it and wait two more days to make sure I did it right that it is very hard. With Yom Kippur I can go back to things the next day so it is not as hard as Tisha B'Av. I am glad you made it through with no headache.

I have heard that it is the most holiest day in the Jewish year. We are in lockdown here, and there is no gathering allowed, for prayers, or for anything. The Jewish leaders tried to obtain an exception, for an outdoor gathering, but the Government here knocked them back on their request.

@innertalks Here people either follow the rules or do not. Many did not wear masks when we were supposed to and not social distance and gather in crowds. Some understand what it is and some do not. Yes, Yom Kippur is the holest holiday. Some leaders here condone the gatherings and others do not.

@Hannihar Here some Jewish people got fined $5000 each, for holding a prayer meeting. There are supposed to be no gatherings, and it is strictly enforced here.

@snowy22315 Thank you and so bad others do not respect my commitment to my beliefs. Since I moved to Israel I felt I should be a better Jew than I was growing up and now I try the best I can.

@DocAndersen Fasting for me was not hard. I went to bed still fasting and got up very late to go to the bathroom and drank something. There is one day out of the year which is fasting for the loss of our Temples and it is a very hard day.
