My Number is 40% of what? I googled how to find out what total my income is 40% of. There is a formula. Don't tell me that you don't use algebra. The formula (or Step 1): MN (my number) = 40% × Y Step 2: MN = 40/100× Y Step 3: Y = MN x 100/40 So, I plugged in My Number, multiplied it by 100, divided it by 40 and got my answer just fine. Then, I got to thinking. What if I take my number, divide it by 4, add that number to My Number and then double it. That works. THEN, I thought I'd try something else. On paper, I divided My Number by 4. While I was doing that, the number was starting to look familiar. It was looking an awful lot like the total I got when I worked the formula from googling. When I finished division of My Number, I thought, "This is one-fourth of my number which is one-tenth of one-hundred percent so I need to multiply this by 10 (which means adding a zero)." Voila! I got the right answer! Well, Duh!! Why didn't I think of that in the first place. It would've saved me from googling it!! LOL Hope you were able to follow my thought process.

I'm not real great with numbers, but when I can figure out a way that I can understand on how to get the same answer, I'll do it that way. I hated word problems in school. Ugh!!

Yes I follow you. I wish it were not so though about that place you can move to. I am no good at algebra but I sure know when I am being ripped off.

I used to be good at algebra but this formula flew over my head. I took a different stream in college.
